I love reading articles like this. They are vain and pointless; this guy is waxing poetic about a relatively bloated overpriced niche machine, clinging hard to his "less is more" credo with a hard-on for "automotive modesty".

"That's, like, stock RX-7 territory! Sure was fast in 1995! Will be coveted in 2045!"

"The E30 was, like, only a 1000 lbs less guyz!!!1!"

Sure, absolutely, people in 2045 will be lusting after a 3400 lbs four banger, borderline ill equipped, and overpriced af, even for its time. No one will care for the M2C because "M cars are hard to live with", or the M240i "because it is soooo heavyyyy". This guyz is the modern BMW Classic! This article was crafted as a dog-whistle for a "Car too fast?" type circle-jerk.

Edit: I should take back the "overpriced" comment. My bad. It tops out at 43k.

Auto vs stick

I have had stick shift jeeps and drove trucks with them. Not sure I really know why I would like it on a 2 series car ? Can someone try to spell it out for me how it makes the car more fun ? I know sportstick will chime in and I would like to be enlightened. Maybe that’s what I am missing on the current car list to find a fun car to drive for a third car.
A 230 with manual trans is available. But so is same car in auto ?
Please help me out.

I drove both the auto and manual, and preferred the auto. The manual had a weird rev hang (I'm guessing emissions?) that just didn't feel right. But otherwise the article is spot-on for the things that make this car great.

Mine has the ZF8 auto, slicktop, track package, m-perf spoiler and black grills, with nothing else. Its every bit the RWD, turbocharged sport compact I always wanted as a kid. And then modifying made it even better.

All that said...I think its going to be the 6MT E87 128i's that are the future classic. The N20/26 and B46/48 2.0T's just don't sound as good as the N52 3.0L.

It's just personal preference. For me, personally, I genuinely enjoy the feeling of shifting gears, matching revs and using the clutch. I like constantly working to make a bunch of rotating parts synchronize with one another and getting each one moving at just the right speed to minimize drivetrain shock. When you think about what's actually going on inside a gearbox, it's honestly kind of amazing. And I genuinely love the fact that for all intents and purposes, i'm manipulating the innermost workings of my car by poking it with a stick.

I freely admit to being kind of a weirdo though. I also enjoy driving shitty old jeeps and trucks with not-very-good feeling transmissions.

Never! I enjoy driving with the windows down and couldn't live with the Supra's catastrophic buffeting.

This is the best looking 2er on the forum...it's mine, and it's not for sale. It's the best color, a 6-spd, RWD, and a 'vert. It's nearly perfect. New mirror caps, black grilles, and a tune, and now it IS perfect. Eat your heart out 'stick. Your car is now the second best 2er on the forum...and it'll never be better than mine...'cause yours will never be faster than mine! Case closed. Even an esteemed lawyer, like my friend 'stick, knows when he's beat.
