n54 engine swap
Hello everyone,
So I am doing an engine swap on my 2008 535xi N54 with a donor bare N54 engine. what gaskets do you guys recommend replacing? I am transferring all the old components from my old engine like water pump, hpfp, thermostat, power steering, everything basically. I went to my dealer and came up with a list of all the gaskets I will have to open but I am not sure if it is an over kill. the donor engine has 97k miles and my car has 77k FYI intake manifold gaskets catalytic convertor gasket x2 High pressure fuel pump o ring oil filter housing gasket valve cover gasket (easier when the engine is out of the car) oil pan gasket (easier when the engine is out of the car) engine oil level sensor seal axle shaft seal x2 (because being and there is a front diff) differential side cover o ring exhaust manifold gasket x6 intake pipe seal x2 this brings my total for the gaskets and some bolts for the pan to 500$ from the dealer or 280$ from FCP euro. so is this an overkill for the gaskets or does it sound right? like do I need to replace all those gaskets when I pull the engine? or can some be eliminated? if there is anything else that needs to be added to the list either a must replace or better to replace when the engine is out please feel free to suggest. so basically my main questions are: 1. should I go with the dealer parts or fop euro? 2. are any of those gaskets listed above not needed to be replaced? 3. are there any gaskets that I am missing either a must replace or better to replace because much harder when engine in the car? thanks so much guys really appreciate your help |

If it's being removed and reinstalled, replace the seal/gasket.
Add the rear main seal, I wouldn't touch the front if it isn't leaking. Google recent rod bearing failures on N54s, consider doing those while it's out and you're doing the OPG. FCP. If you plan on keeping the car for a while, or if you end up screwing something up, the lifetime warranty is very nice. Use OE/OEM parts. Don't forget the aluminum coolant hose flange, if you don't already have one. Inspect hoses thoroughly while everything is out. Replace anything that looks suspect. |

Ask yourself how you are going to feel if something goes bad after you install the engine when you had the chance to do it months ago with the engine out.
I say do it all so you have no ragretz Edit: Aluminum coolant hose flange is a MUST for EVERYONE. Do it do it do it.
