Just out of curiosity I've kept an eye on my previous car after lease turn in - was wondering where it would eventually end up and how all the numbers would work out. Here you go:
  1. 2017 340 MSport - residual was $34,000
  2. $6,000 covid incentive was offered bringing optional purchase price to $28,000
  3. Turned the car in on June 1st to my local dealer here in SoCal
  4. Car was transported to auction in Nevada where it sat for 2 months
  5. Car sold at auction on August 5th for $29,500
  6. Car is now at an independent dealer in PNW offered for sale at $33,995

I randomly browse for 340s from time to time and I've noticed an uptick in the prices. Some 17s and 18s with m sport and especially 6MT are stickered in the $40s...sheesh
Edit: you should have bought it...

There was a guy locally trying to sell his M Sport diesel F31 for 30k on facebook market place before he returned the lease.

He ended up returning it and my local dealership picked it up and has it listed for 39k

I'm surprised how F31d prices have been lately. Some 2017 328d F31s are running as high as $40k! Reinforces the fact that I made the right call to keep mine.

They've always demanded more than sedans that's for sure. Bought my first one in 2018 and it was a solid 5k+ over a comparable sedan variant

A real bounce in prices over here in the UK as well. Plenty of half empty BMW forecourts, they're crying out for used stock.

How did you do this tracking? Out of my curiosity and to be able to do that with previous car.
Thanks

That's a really good question
  • I used BMW connected app on my phone (still not turned off - I guess I could honk the horn for some fun - not going to) to follow location
  • Friend has a shop that has access to the west coast auctions - so we watched and found the car
  • Then used my connected app to find the car located at the dealer - based on that I pulled up the dealer website and found the car for sale

Not surprised at the PNW markup.

I was entertaining moving to a C450, found one and checked vin, was previously listed in utah for 27.5k, transferred\sold to a dealer here who has it listed for 32k, and you can bet the dealer here did not pay 27.5 for it, so its a pretty healthy profit margin.
