Why Would This Not Be A CPO?
Hi everybody -
I'm puzzled. I saw a nice 2017 540i at an independent "luxury car specialist" not too far away. It has about 7000 miles and CarFax shows it as a lease return. I can't quite figure out why the dealer who received it at the end of the lease didn't keep it and CPO it. Does this imply there is something wrong with the car? Or, does BMW not want to provide an extended warranty on something with so FEW miles (causing it to be sent to auction)? Any speculation would be interesting |

Possibly had aftermarket modifications that would make it ineligible for CPO. A Dinan tune from the dealership would automatically kill any future attempts to certify as CPO.

When a dealer accepts a lease turn-in, it has the option of buying the car from BMW FS or sending it back, where it typically goes to auction. The particular dealer would pass if it has too much inventory, the margin doesn't work, wear is significant, or the car does not look like an easy sell based on color or options.
The 5-series has some of the worst depreciation in the industry, so there may not be enough margin between the dealer's buyout cost and anticipated CPO transaction, especially for a 2017 model when so many 2018 leases are coming back.

This one was originally from NYC, which I think explains the low miles (a date-night car or whatever). It also fits with the private leasing co, scenario; I understand that's very common there.
This one is pretty well loaded and is advertised at $45K (which I'm guessing is too much). Trying to suss out how suspicious it is. I think I see the problem... it failed its NY State emissions inspection. Not sure how a car with such low mileage fails, but there it is. Last edited by kosmokratur; 12-26-2020 at 10:31 PM.. |

I don't understand why all of you guys think this car has been tuned. Did I miss something?
I concur with ArchJR
