E90 335i Base Stereo System Upgrade

After owning my 2011 335i for over two years the base stereo was absolutely killing me. I had installed a combox retrofit shortly after purchasing the car but the sound system needed to go. Luckily there was a lot of contribution from forum members around 2010-2013 documenting their installs and explaining the issues with the base stereo equalization. All of this information made it significantly easier to spec out and install this system.

I reached out to Technic PnP to get a harness and explained I had the base system and was going to code the head unit to Hifi. Thankfully he mentioned that I should try to code it before starting the install as some head units could not be properly coded. This ended up being true in my case so I purchased a used Hifi CIC head unit and swapped it in. The swapped HU had the lasted c1a firmware so I was able to use the CIC patcher v2 to unlock the Navigation.

So after spending almost three full days working on this install, here it is....

Equipment for Install

Used Musicar Stage 3 from a E91:
  • Morel Hybrid 402 Front
  • Jehnert XE 200 Underseat
  • Arc Audio XDi 1200.6 Amp
  • Match DSP
  • RCA Cables from DSP to Amp
  • Amp Mount

Added in components:
  • Audiofrog GS42 Rear Speakers
  • HiFi Tweeter Sails
  • Technic PnP Base 4/6 Harness with RCA Termination
  • Individual Audio Front Speaker Covers
  • Female RCA for DSP connections
  • New Carpeted Floor Mats

Interior Disassembly

Cable Runs

Testing Amp with Stock Speakers

Installing Upgraded Speakers

Testing DSP and Newly Installed Speakers

Interior re-installed, Amp Mounted, and an Attempt at Cable Management

Thanks, I listen to a lot of rock music and it is killer for that. Might need to tweak the dsp a bit as the jehnerts are low passed and I don't want to damage them with the sub frequencies. That is how Musicar set it up though so I think they would know best.

I have a musicar system with jehnerts and morels and a Jl 600/6
They underseats are low passed at around 180 and the doors are
high passed at slightly higher.

see second entry the paper marking is what it came adjusted to.
Although I don't know if this has any meaning for a DSP since it all has all the electronic filters.

Ok thanks for the reference. I'm still trying to wrap my head around everything because there are so many adjustments possible. The DSP has both input gain and output gain, then you have amp gains on top of that. I currently have the DSP input gain maxed out, DSP output gain set at the default that Musicar tuned it for, and the amp gains all at minimum. This is giving me no alternator whine and just a faint hissing noise that is not noticeable while music is playing.

The DSP file I was given has the output gains; front speakers at -12 dB, rears at -14 dB and underseats at -4 dB. Everything is crossed in the DSP and full output on amp, crossovers settings of 200 Hz @ 12db/Oct slope for all channels. High pass front/rear and low pass underseat. Sounds really really good when not driving but the road noise deadens out a bit of the bass. Will likely increase the underseat amp gain to get more punch and then mess with the equalization on the DSP if needed. I can always bump up bass in the head unit also if I need a bit extra on the fly.

Currently the morels are playing down to 50 Hz but they are highly attenuated from 50-125 Hz with the crossover so not much actual low frequency is playing out of them. The individual covers were only $50 each on getBMWparts but I'm not sure about your neck of the woods.
