G31 - Water leak above rear windows

Hi all

My lovely G31, from spring 2019, seems to have a problem with keeping water out of the area above the windows in the rear doors. Apparently water gets in and drenches the door seals, when it rains. The seals almost seem like a sponge and soaks up the water. When the doors are opened, much of the water will fall out, and land on the back seat, but the “spongy” door seal will still be very wet.

When the weather is cold the back doors will freeze. I can only get the doors open, by pushing from the inside and it will look as in my picture below.

BMW is aware of the problem, and supposedly made a new version of the door seal. My local BMW service center thought they could fix it by changing the seals. Unfortunately, it turns out that my car already has the newest version. Since that is the case, all they could do was to apply some silicone.

Anyway, it didn’t seem to help at all. This morning the back doors were froze shut.

I am a bit worried if this constant buildup of water can damage the car? Rust in the doors maybe?

The climate in the car also seems to take a hit. On rainy days, the rear windows are foggy, even after driving for 30 minutes with the AC on.

Should I be worried, or is it just a nuisance?

Amy suggestions?

It seems to be similar to what the poster in the thread below experienced on his F11. I haven’t found any threads like this regarding the G31. Does anybody else here have the problem?

I have the same issue and have learnt to live with it. I also have the issue with frozen handles so on many occasions over the recent cold weather I have only been able to open one door.

I also noticed the door seal would absorb and hold on to water. When it froze and stuck to the car it would take bits of the felt off the seal (where it was frozen to the car).

I had an old f10 that had the creaky door seals issue. They applied tape around the doorframe of the car which eradicated the creak. Maybe the tape could help the freezing issue? However will probably not do too much about water collecting in the seal.

Sorry I couldn't help more. Like I said I have just gotten used to it

I believe you should insist with your BMW dealership, I presume it still has factory warranty. They should change the seals because that is not acceptable for a "premium" car.
Probably the seals have been poorly fitted or have some factory defect. It cannot be wear or loss of properties for a car that new.

I agree push the dealer on it. I don’t have this issue on my car yet.

Thanks for the response. Learning to live with it is also something I have considered, but I think it annoys me too much. So I have contacted the dealer where I bought it again, and am waiting for their reply.

Since it is under warranty, I had a dealer closer to me try to fix it, and naturally they did not charge anything for this, since it is under warranty.

Do you have any concerns of the long time effects of this on your car?

I am in the fortunate position where I am getting a new G30 at the weekend so I have not bothered to get a fix. If I was keeping my G31 longer term I would (as others suggested) push for a fix. Longer term I would imagine if the seal holds water and is subject to freezing temperatures, the seal would eventually perish and begin letting water into the car. In terms of rust, I don't think there is enough sitting pooled water to cause this (but you never know) as all I have is water droplets across the top of the frame on the car.

However, a car at this price point should not have this issue and I would keep pushing the dealer. Even if they have to replace the seals with the same ones you have, at least they will be dry to start with.

Thank you for the reply and congrats on the new G30

Thanks to everyone else as well. I will keep pushing the dealer.

I am still curious to hear if someone here has actually had the problem, and had it fixed.

Hello!

Did you ever get a fix for this issue? I have exactly the same issue with 2020 G31. I have been to dealer several times and they even have replaced the seals but with no luck(i can still see water accumulating inside the door seals after its been raining more heavily, which means doors are going to freeze in winter).
