Tire and Wheel Warranty
Fellows,
It seems to me the tire profile is pretty low if I go with 19/20 inches. I travelled between CT and NY in every weekend and the I-287 does not have the best condition, which makes me kinda worry about the wellbeing of the tire. I might need some opinion whether I should get the tire/wheel insurance r not. If anyone decide to have the tire wheel warranty from BMW , would you mind letting me know whats the deal you get for the insurance? Thanks for advance. |

I opted for the wheel/tire warranty on my F80. It paid for itself in 2 years. I had 3 tires collect a screw and they don't repair them they replaced them with new tires.
My third puncture resulted in the BMW towing company scraping my carbon fiber rear diffuser which BMW compensated me for by giving me the full value of it so, I still have 2 more years of free tires if needed! |

The average person that buys tire and wheel insurance will spend more in premiums than they will get back in coverage. How do I know this? Because if that weren't the case, companies would stop selling this insurance product. The fact that the dealership finance manager pushes it so hard, suggests your expected value from the policy is a lot lower than the premiums you'll pay.
To be clear, all insurance works this way. On average, I'll spend more on life, homeowners, and car insurance premiums than I can expect to re-coup in claims. I'm ok with that, because the risk is huge for each one. If I die when my kids are young, how will they pay the bills? If my entire house is destroyed in a fire, I don't have to come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars. If I kill someone with my car and they sue me for $1,000,000, I know my insurance will pay for it. I happily pay for something that I probably won't benefit from. Now, you're asking about Tire & Wheel coverage. A few people will post how they got 5 tires replaced and it was totally worth it. Others will say I didn't get it. Same thing with extended warranties, gap insurance, and similar products. This is a question only you can answer. Your expected outcome is that you will pay more in premiums than you'll get back. You might get "lucky" and have more flat tires than average person and get more back, but probably not. So...how much is piece of mind worth to you? How financially painful would it be if you have to spend $600-$700 on a new tire?

One other thought. The warranties usually pro-rate based on usage. So, if your tread is 50% and you need a replacement, they only pay 50% of the new tire. Another ding to your expected value.

If you don't get it, worst case you have to replace a non-repairable tire, then get the road hazard insurance on the replacement from Tire Rack. It's dirt cheap and I have had that replace a couple of tires before whenever I did run into the unlikely scenario of it being damaged again.
The more expensive replacement would be a cracked wheel, and you'd really have to hit a deep pot hole at high speed for that to be an issue. Even then, it may do enough damage to be covered under your auto insurance. Speaking of which, double check what your insurance and even credit cards may cover. Some of the selling points the dealer tried to make for us on our last lease for instance was towing coverage. Again, I already get towing and rental coverage from my auto insurance. |

When I look at how many tire or wheel problems I've had over 30+ years of driving, which is to say almost none, the wheel warranty is way overpriced for the likelihood I'd get any use out of it.
What would it cost to replace one tire and wheel combo? Certainly not $2400. And considering that I've never had to replace a wheel in 30 years of driving, what is the likelihood that I'm going to have to replace more than one in the next 3 years of owning this car? Nope, not worth it.

I was looking on Tire Rack out of interest and the PS4S is ~$360 and includes hazard warranty free of charge. I believe it is a heavily diminishing value coverage, but price is right.

I have always bought replacement Michelin Pilot Sport 4S from TireRack for my F82 because of the included Road Hazard insurance. Great deal and I’ve used it twice (screw once and nail once). They quickly shipped replacements to local installer at no cost (other than mounting and balancing).

The reason I am asking is because the only BMW I drove (and still driving) is F30 340 with 225/45/18 tire. And I did hit several potholes which I thought will blowout the tires but amazingly didn't. (Wheel got bent once with no tire damage). Since I never drove any car with low profile tire, and hearing of all the talks about how fragile thoes tires are, it makes me consider any insurance. Probably those low profile tire are not as fragile as I expected. |

Yeah I am looking at tire rack as well. It seems the winter tire option for G8X is limited at this moment.
