Remapped 330d, versus standard 335d ?
Anybody tried both of these ?
ie: how does the remapped 330d (just a straight re-map, no additional air intakes/exhaust mods etc) compare to the performance of the 335d ? Is the 335d still much quicker, or is there not a lot in them when the 330d is mapped ?

I wouldnt say it was much quicker. I would think the gap would be pretty close to a stock 335d. Although the driveability of the 335d cannot be knocked. It will always have that upper hand over the 330d mapped.
Good idea would be to get a mapped 330d to santa pod or one of the other drag strips in the country to see what they can do.

No, I`m still mulling over getting it done mate.
That`s why I`m wondering about the performance difference, as the 335d is pretty much out there on it`s own, as a road car, and if a re-map can give the 330d comparable performance, then...........?

You really should get it done, and add at least a more free flowing filter.
If you got a remap and a filter and then added a free flowing exhaust you would have a car that would be very impressive and more responsive all round. |

The 335d will be about 30kg heavier, they will have about the same bhp but will have less torque than a good 330d map but the extra turbo will give the engine better flexability and a faster pickup.
335d 286bhp 580Nm, 330d+ 290bhp 600Nm-660Nm Probably about the same |

Cheers Crimson; some good facts there for me to think about.......and certainly, from the figures given, the performance would seem to be comparable, although delivered in a slightly smoother fashion by the 335d.
Appreciated.

My 330d has 292bhp and 510lbs and I would guess its very similar in outright performance to a stock 335d.
However the reason I bought the 330d was I prefer the single-turbo power delivery of the 330d - old skool wallop - I have driven several x35d's and whilst undoubtedly quick, none of them wowed me. The x35d revs more like a petrol and the power delivery is more linear, the 330d is more traditional diesel style. The remap just makes it even better - silly midrange. Just my 2p Must try a remapped 335d though lol |

I know what your saying, i do love a little lag myself. The 335d does rev like a petrol. Revs rather quickly. I have not driven a 330d but have been out in Wills mapped one. It was rather fast.

The biggest positive (for me) of a remapped 330d over a 335d is that you can have a glorious manual gearbox.
As gIzzE says, and I've heard from others, a remap coupled with a better filter (which costs peanuts so is a no-brainer really) really makes a difference. I'm still seriously considering making these two changes but trying to work out my car situation first.

Interesting one!
I imagine BMW will make the 335d slightly quicker than a mapped 330d, due to the fact they will have an idea that people will be thinking "if I remap my 330d ... I can have a manual 'box and around the same power as a 335d" - so I imagine BMW have made the 335d with more stock power due to this. Can anyone actually explain this remapping to me, especially now I've gone and bought myself a modern car, that may benefit from it!

Yes, although most cars with a decent ecu can be mapped.
Gains on a non turbod car are not that much so not really worth the expenditure. A re-map on a turbo car, to run more boost/fuel/ignition can bring some good gains.

According to website my car would gain 15bhp from being remapped. Costs from £250, not worth it for the daily driver in my opinion. Want to buy some nice wheels for it and £250 goes a good way to finding some nice wheels (only want genuine BMW wheels) which is a pain because the E39 has a strange fitment! Though surely a 540i should gain more than 22bhp from being remapped?

I think you would be lucky to see that really. (15bhp)
There is not much to play with on the ECU on a non turbo car. Now you would get 22bhp + on a 540 with A full exhaust, de-cat pipe, filter and a re-map. expensive game tuning a N/A car.

A stock 540i is a lovely piece of kit anyway but no more borrowing that for me Oh you just reminded me this E39 will have a Cat exhaust won't it? At least it's got full MOT so won't have to worry about that unless I keep it!!

Probably much like yourself, I also prefer the old diesel-wallop, as you say; in fact, my 330d sometimes reminds me of my old Scooby STI PPP, in the way that there`s just that fraction of a wait, then..................BABOOOMMM ! Gotta love it...............I know I do, and I would imagine a re-map can only make it more-so ! Good power gains as well there mate, where did you get it done ?
