tires for winter
ok guys first winter with the bimm. so i have a 328 xi with Bridgestone Turanzas stock do you guys think ill be ok for the snow with some long comutes ahead. should i switch to winter tires instead of the all season setup. thx

Get proper winter tires, 4WD will help getting out of snow from a start but not help in braking, your tires matter. It can be the difference between a crash and a near crash.
Recommendations: Dunlop Wintersport 3D or Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 for 'performance winter' driving- good for light snow, plowed roads performance better than 'studless snow & ice tires' Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 for snow driving - better for heavier layers of snow and ice, plowed roads performance worse than performance winters. Expect to pay roughly $700 for tires + mounting/balance

You can't beat the feeling of winter specific tires during the few months that we need them here in NE.. but if you dont have the space to store them, or dont want to deal with the est. $100 to swap tires ever time. Then just ride out the winter on your Oems driving a little more cautious than normal.
The tires do 'OK' in snow, ice and hills in the winter.. The one gripe that I had are that they eventually wear unevenly, cup and ride like crap.

Nokian Hakka R and Vredestein WinTrac Extreme came highly recommended by my friends in the Scandinavia, but I don't have any experience with them yet (I have set of Vredestein 19" on order). Last season I had the Dunlop Wintersport 3D which served me well even in ice, snow, or the middle of a snow storm. I was able to track it all the way up from downtown to Beverly in the midst of the worst storm of last winter. For the two previous seasons before that I had Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 on my E55. There was a lot of traction issue with the car, but the tires performed great. On the other hand, I didn't drive that much as well.
