new black grill, DIY £10
I read another lads thread about doing a diy grill painting. I have previously done a set of headlights like this in the past and thought hey its worth a go.
Pieces came of real easy, rubbed down this some 180 paper, the bought a fine type pad from b&q, rubbed it some more till all the silver was mat. Then painted with grey plastic primer then applied the matt black. All in took me about 4hrs most of that was waiting on the coats to dry. I'm really happy with the results, just need my carbon badges next Phil Last edited by philg; 10-29-2008 at 11:44 AM.. |

Very happy with the results, i gave her about 5 coats of each so hope it will not chip to much.
Should be getting my carbon badges within a few weeks currently out of stock. I think im going to d badge to and replace with a grill and rear m badge, the dark black striped ones. My mate said to me years ago, one a maxer always a maxer phil |

Hi,
That looks really good! If I wanted a hi-gloss look would I just put a few coats of 'clear coat' / 'Varnish'? over the top?

I'm thinking to high-gloss mine, but in the car body colour, Jerez Black. But I'll probably buy another grill on eBay to do it on, it case it goes wrong/doesn't look so good.

I too want High Gloss black, to match the other gloss black trimings i have on the car. My car is LM blue and while I like the matt black on black, white and silver cars I'm not 100% sure about it on Blue cars. Anyone know if you can buy them in Gloss Black. Seen some dodgy looking ones on eBay, didn't look that good IMO but the ones people post about on here do look good.

For my Z4 I bought some dechrome tape to do the grill. I only wanted to remove the chrome. It was a faff but meant I could remove it come resale time.

The guy where i bought the paint said clearcoat would make it gloss like, so that would defeat me buying matt paint.
You can buy gloss black paint so only the primer and gloss paint would be needed i think. Don't bother with ebay jobbies i was going to buy one from c a automotive for about £50, For what it costs to do and if it chips then its no biggie, i would then buy a black one from else where. I can not express how easy it was to do. phil |
