Anyone else getting Passenger Safety Restraint Malfunction warning?
As the title say, I keep seeing this pop-up in my 2018 M550i. Nothing new that I am doing. I typically put my backpack on the seat to and from work and that has my laptop and food. Don't get it.

I got this when I removed a seat there is a connector that I forgot about. It won't go away unless you have the code cleared by BMW or an independent. They should also check all connectors under the seat as that's what kicks the fault in the first place.

SIB720417
Had the same issue. Took a week researching into it and found this service bulletin SIB720417 (if you google it, you can get it). Demanded to have the sensor replaced at the dealership. After they did it the problem went away.
Don't settle for the initial two steps, DEMAND to have the sensor replaced. |

No but I've been getting some annoying ass alerts in my 2021 540
Regenerative breaking error Driving assist error I brought it to dealer for the regenerative breaking and they had no clue. He was like first time I heard that in 10 years. So you know how that went. |

Or does the warning go off if you buckle the front passenger seat belt when the back pack is on the surface of the seat?

I had this problem 4X with my X5 40e. Each time it was the same connector under the seat. I sent an NTSB safety report and sent all 4 service tickets to the NTSB. Requested that BMW take the lease back--one failure was during a road trip far from home. BMW stonewalled until the NTSB notified me they were starting an investigation.
Suggest that all with this problem make a report to the NTSB. BMW could be telling NTSB it's a "one-off" and more reports may cause BMW to actually find the cause and issue a recall. Or, with more reports, NTSB may order a recall. |

I have this happen every so often, just started again. When I told the dealer about it, they said my cell phone could trip the sensor with the electronics. I would usually call BS, but at the time I had been placing my cell in the front seat. Lately, I have not even had the cell in my car and it happens. Thanks for sharing the service bullitien,

Does anyone have any updates on this? My car just popped this error on me today. I had nothing on the seat and typically never do. I stopped to get gas and it popped again after starting the car to leave. I stopped at a store and when I drove home from there, no error. I dread having to take the car in for this.

I haven't had it happen since, but I still put stuff on the front seat - so the no rhyme or reason has me perplexed. |

Well, still under warranty but a PITA to take it to the dealership. Especially since they'll just put a couple of zip ties on it, which likely won't be a long-term fix. It'll last until it's out of warranty and then I'll get to pay for the replacement mat.

Had this happen on my 2018 540i over the first 2 years or so. Brought it in once to a dealer in Vegas, twice to a dealer in Florida, then twice to a dealer in VA. Each time the reset sensors or replaced them. The final visit they kept the car 2 weeks or so for testing with corporate office. They ended up replacing the entire passenger seat. Only kept the car for about a year after that, but never saw the issue again.
Haven’t seen this on 2021 M550. 540 had standard seats, 550 has massaging and ventilated seats. |

My car is at the dealership and was diagnosed with a sensor pad failure. My factory warranty expired between the time I made the appointment and the time the car was able to be seen by the dealer. I'm trying to get them to cover the repair since I have better things to spend $1,200 on at this time of year.
Update: Just got a call from my SA -- BMW will cover the cost and the parts are in stock. Last edited by dscabra; 11-27-2021 at 01:50 PM.. |
