2022 BMW i4 Walkaround: ALL You NEED To Know About The All Electric BMW Sports Sedan

Is this the end of the petrol M cars?

The new electric iM cars are apparently cheaper with higher performance. What does this mean? We might be seeing the last petrol M cars (maybe another 3-5 more years before every BMW sold becomes electric?).

Its hard to say. Lots of states are mandating all electric by 20XX to sell or register a new car in the state.

The big issue that the electric only people are forgetting is infrastructure. Not really thinking about charging stations but power generation.

Biggest draw for electrics is California which can't currently keep the lights on in the summer. Add 4 or 5 million electric cars into the mix & the state is basically power dead.

I didn't know it was all electric. I thought only a certain % needed to be electric. That sucks

Sure, lets talk heat waves across the US. Then the advisories start to conserve energy. Then rolling, intentional, black outs occur. What you gonna do? Go ask the neighbor if you can borrow his/her electricity.... ohh wait intentional black outs.

So yeah, let's talk infrastructure before we start talking about removal of ICE cars.

Lastly, I do not believe for one second BMW will lower prices on cars, especially M cars. Be it strong dollar, be it weak dollar, be it strong economy, be it recession. BMW is a for profit global organization simple as that. This has always been a one way conversation, prices may remain flat and go up, but never down.

Cars weren't the end of horses, it just meant horses became a luxury items for the gentry (for the most part). I would assume ICE cars will go the same way. I look forward to uncovering my M3 in 50 years and showing my great grand kids the 3 pedals and what a straight piped inline 6 sounds like. Of course it'll be illegal to drive on the streets in California, but I'll fire it up in the garage and dream of what once was.

Yes. After having a 09 C63 AMG, 11 E92 M3, 14 M5, 17 X5M and now a 20 M5 I am strongly considering a Tesla Model S Plaid. If I am thinking this way then lots of M people are.

I think G8x may be the last purely ICE Ms.
I will stick to mine as long as they let me drive it.
Electric may be faster and better performance, but it will never be the same, at least for us who were born and lived with ICE

I recon you are on the money there. It will be the last of the Petrol cars. However, I know they are working on hydrogen engines. Been working on them for a while. The only issue there is the cost of manufacturing hydrogen. With the investment in hydrogen manufacturing as a 0 carbon fuel, I recon it may change it up again

If 0-60 launches are all that matters then maybe.

i4M50 has 0-60 of 3.9 as an AWD. I will point out that BMW still hasn't caught up to Tesla Model 3 performance from 2019, which is really unfortunate.

M3 AWD will be lower compared to te i4M50 in terms of 0-60, so at this point the ICE offering is a bit better. Also, driving dynamics should be better with the true M car plus lower weight of the M3, although that remains to be seen. The gap is narrowing rapidly.

As Marcus Flasch himself said, they intentionally tuned down i4 M50 to be slower than G8x, as they dont want (yet) electric cars to outperform their ICE siblings.
I think they already have the means and tech to improve that 0-60 if they intended to.

My naive hope is that advances in alternative fuels could enable a greener application of the ICE in the future. I give credit to Porsche for researching in this area and hope BMW is doing the same!

I think it is a bit foolish strategy, even if true. They should make the best car they can for the best price they can, so that BMW can become more relevant and acquire market share from other companies. Even if they can tune up the i4 to beat the M3 in 0-60, that doesn't mean it will be better in other regards.

Also, in this day and age they should be targeting 400 mile ranges.

I expect that my M3C xDrive will be my last ICE car, and don't plan to ever part with it. As far as EVs, I'm holding out for fuel cells to be feasible at scale.

I think this is what Z generation asks for.
