Bye, bye, my little 5

Very sad to see the 540i go yesterday. I found a guy who agreed to assume the last 8 months of my lease, and the car was picked up last night.

Why? Very simple: I bought a new M4 (G82). Usually I have two cars because the M cars are so brutal (my previous one was an M2) and uncomfortable, or I've got something silly like a Corvette that requires assistance from my nurse to get in and out of. But the new M4 is so comfortable and pleasant and can easily be my DD, that I didn't need two cars, and I can certainly do without the extra payment, so the 5 had to go.

I will tell you guys and gals, because you know where I'm coming from, that this has been the best BMW that I have ever owned (except for the M4). It was quiet, comfortable, reliable, with really impressive performance and yet returned fabulous gas mileage. It was by no means perfect; no car is, especially a BMW. But overall, it was a wonderful ownership experience.

I used to think that the E39 was the ultimate 5 series, but I know now that it is the G30. I see an M550i in my future, but until then I will be happy in my little 4.

Ya'all take care and thanks for letting me share.

I wish I had a bunch of pictures to share, but I'm having camera difficulties. More accurately, the idiot behind the camera. Here are a few interior pics.

And yes, those badges in the seat light up.

Really digging the M4!

Sorry to see you go, but hopefully you'll still pop in here from time to time

I chose a manual because I like to drive. To me, shifting gears is all part of the experience. Practicing the skill; trying to shift smoothly so that people don't even notice, heel & toe downshifting again to be smooth, and not relying on Mr. Computer to select my gears for me, not that he doesn't do everything else in these cars.

Ask me again after I spend an hour stuck in traffic.

The M4 transmission is just like every other BMW transmission, evolved. By that I mean that the CDV is still there, annoying me as always, but I'm getting more used to it. As a new car, it's not yet broken in so sometimes it's a little reluctant to get into some gears. I've owned enough (see sig) BMWs to know that this is normal. The slop in the shifter that used to present on older cars (even when new) is gone, and it seems to me, just a little bit, that the side-to-side spacing is just a little wider than it used to be, i.e. fifth and sixth are a smidgen further away from third and fourth.

Overall, no regrets.

Congrats, a 3 pedal M4 is hard to pass up. I will disagree with you on the G30 being the best 5-series. I have an E39 540 m-tech and a G30 M550 and the 18 year old E39 still is more of a drivers car. The thing is just smooth and straight. It leaves me shaking my head after a long highway trip how effortless it is to drive and how comfortable it is and how well it handles. I think because the wheel base is smaller and it rides lower with the MII suspension.

Nice pickup! I was at the verge of ordering a '22 M3 AWD, but decided to opt for the '22 M550i instead. I was actually at the dealership looking over the options with the intent to sign that day, but after careful consideration wasn't willing to spend slightly optioned M550i money on an M3 at MSRP the way I had it configured. It was the last allocation they had left at that time.

After the M2C, I wanted something more luxurious that still packs a punch but offers a lot more options for everyday use.

I assume you didn't want to wait for AWD because you don't see much snow where you live? It was over $4k more when I was looking into it.

I believe (I may be mistaken) that the AWD option is only available with the automatic transmission, which I didn't want. And yes, we don't get much snow here, and if we do, generally my workplace shuts down and in the worst case, we can take the Jeep Wrangler to work. The wife and I work at the same place. But I hate driving the Jeep (it's hers).

If I was going to get an auto, I think I'd do the same as you, and get the M550i. That is a great car, and really for me, the premium required to move up to the M5 isn't worth it. They turn up the awesome to eleven on that car, but seriously, the G30 is a better platform and the M550i has about the same horsepower as the previous generation M5 anyway, and it's plenty!
