PC HELP required

Need some help from the less techie-challenged among you please!!

I am logged on with my work laptop just now. I tried to boot up my own laptop earlier and it made a loud long beep followed by two short beeps and nothing else happened. I have tried switching it off and on again and taken the battery out and tried again but same thing happened again

Any ideas?

Thanks

Snooky

You'll need to say which laptop ?

The beeps are usually a low-level warning from the motherboard.

If you know the make and model you should be able to find a list of the beeps are their meanings on the internet.

Thanks Dave

It's an HP Pavillion dp2278ea

I have searched the HP website and followed their instructions for troubleshooting when the machine does not boot up properly. The AC is working fine and I have tried removing and re-seating the memory as directed but still the annoying beeps and black screen.

Unfortunately their helpline people finish at 6pm on a Friday so it looks like I have to wait until tomorrow.

If you have them try putting the Windows XP or recovery CD's in the drive and start up. My Acer was set to read the DVD drive prior to the hard drive and usually recovered itself by using the Windows XP repair option.

You really need to determine what mother board (make, ASUS etc. even though it is branded HP) that is being used as it is the BIOS that is emitting the error beeps.

I wouldn't imagine trying a bootable CD will work, as the error appears much earlier, and at a lower level. I am assuming it just sits there after the beeps ? Does it display anything onscreen ?

Could be something simple (ram, clock battery, keyboard jam etc.), or something that is not cost-effective to fix.

You will still be able to retrieve all your data from the HDD.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Much appreciated and, as always, a knowledgeable and helpful group on here!

Not sure I understood much of it but it seems impressive!

I sent a detailed email to HP Support last night and they responded overnight to tell me that the video card "has gone bad" so I need to take it to a technition of some sort. Yellow pages next stop!

Snooky, hope you can get that fixed at a reasonable cost. Good thing your Yellow Pages aren't on your laptop.

LOL

They were actually! I am using my work laptop to research how I fix my toy.

Spoke to a local technicion and they tell me that the Video Card on my laptop is hardwired to the motherboard so I need the whole 9 yards. Cost for the part is £239+VAT. The guy advised me against getting it fixed

They are not going to swap the motherboard over (and run any updates to the bios and chipsets) in a few hours, so you would need to add labour costs to that too.

Much cheaper to buy a new laptop (with warranty), and transfer your data over.
