G80 M4 vs Shelby GT500 vs ZL1 LE

Looks are subjective, we'll skip that. But other than that which one of these 3 would you get as a summer car?

G82 M4 is the most boring out of these, but the best interior tech. Sounds horrible vs the others. The x drive may be quicker from the dig but other than that the GT500 and ZL1 will walk all over the m4.

GT 500 sounds the best, while ZL1 LE is a precise handling track weapon.

ZL1 doesn't "walk all over" the G8x. In fact, they're evenly matched 6MT to 6MT. See video:

https://streamable.com/gpsmg0

That's the base, not the more torquey Comp.

Based on this, the GT500 is faster, but not by a significant margin. Again, not "walking all over" anything.

The G8x offers a complete and premium experience while performing just as well as those cars. It's basically a high-end BMW ZL1 with proper visibility, and now with AWD. As mentioned, you lose the great exhaust sound.

Beyond sound, not sure how you quantify "boring". All three will apply similar G forces to your body while accelerating, braking, and cornering. The G8x has very direct steering and corners flat (again, similar to a ZL1).

I think it'll be obvious which one works for you after driving them.

I have the M2 comp currently. I drove ZL1 a lot, it's leagues above m2 comp performance wise.I'm thinking it's above G80 comp awd even, rwd no comp isn't even a comparison. Remember the ZL1 has 650 hp and 650 torque on a car that weighs the same about. It has a nurburg time of 7:16, that's faster than any BMW car ever. It's faster than the ferrari Enzo and some of porsche GT3 cars. I don't think the M3/M4 bmw stand a chance.

I know the M3/M4 are more premium and have better build quality. I'm just trying to see if anyone tried both and picked the bmw M over the GT 500 and ZL1. Driving the latter two is more of an experience, vs I imagine driving the M3/M4 to be like driving a really fast daily driver w/o a lot of drama.

Not sure what the M2 Comp has to do with these three cars; all 3 of them are a class above it. I traded in my M2 Comp at my earliest opportunity after my G82 6MT test drive.

The G8x shows minimal drivetrain losses on the dyno and puts its power down better than any other modern RWD M car. It competes quite favorably with the ZL1 (including the base RWD G8x, as demonstrated in the above video clip).

All 3 are good choices. If you want ZL1 performance in a much more refined package and you’re OK with the exhaust sound, the G8x is a good choice. If you don’t value the additional quality and refinement, get one of the other two. They’re great cars, too.

Yeah if you are going the muscle car comparison route the M2 Comp compares more to a Mustang GT PP2 or Camaro SS 1LE than a G8 Corvette as it's a level below the three cars the OP listed.

Yep.

Coincidentally, fresh video posted by Edmunds pitting the G82 versus the GT500. From a roll, the GT500 is much faster. The improved G82 launch control lets it keep up from zero to 60.

For a summer car? none of the above.
The G84 is butt ugly and way too heavy, the GT500 is a 5mpg gas guzzler that can barely put any power down and the ZL1 1LE only lives on the track (unless you want kidney transplant at the end of the summer).

Lotus Emira or C8?

The GT500 is still a Hertz rental car on the inside, with cheap cheap cheap plastic and it's a Ford. One of my big gripes with Ford is aside from the lousy paint, they use different fasteners for everything, so you're going from 15mm to 17mm to 3/4" SAE for the same job. The Camaro is a tomb inside, dark and claustrophobic and has the build quality of a Chevrolet. I haven't driven one, but I'd guess that the ZL1 although a monster on the track, is likely difficult to live with on the street.

And hey, this is a BMW forum after all.

You think BMW paint is any better? BMW has a ton of orange peel. You want better paint, buy a Rolls Royce.

Yes I do.

Ford paint is notoriously (at least according to the Internet) thin and fragile. In my brief Mustang ownership, I also felt that it was too easily damaged.

I have a ZL1 and it is indeed a monster on the track and hard to live with as a daily. Hence trading it in for an M3 non-competition. Can't live without a stick.

As mentioned ZL1 LE is brutal on the street.
Regular ZL1 is an awesome street car, manual of course.
Easy to get another 100 whp with modest mods and tune. Beyond that you need to upgrade fuel system.
Visibility is beyond poor. Feels like you're sitting in a bathtub with a kids pool for a roof.

well, keep letting minute details hold you back from having some badass cars. Because trust me, those Chevy v8's are a hoot.

indeed, me too

I'd still choose the M, but my goodness does that GT500 sound epic. Imagine that powertrain in a G8X???

Toyota and BMW collaborated, so can't we hope for a Ford/BMW collab?

Yes I have always thought that would be good for Ford. I have been a mustang and Bmw fan for a long time. Think how good a mustang could be with the refinement engineering of BMW. Ford does build some great V8's

Yeah, this collab could be epic. And Ford would reap rewards of having brand snobs gain access to their wonderful powertrains. But yes, a Ford Mustang with the refinement of a BMW would also be a wonderful package.

If I didn't have to drive it everyday, Shelby. A summer car that you don't mind a single focus. For an all around better car, probably not my first choice. Camaro will always be a tough sell with me for bad ergonomics. Can't do it. Lap times don't matter unless you're taking it to a track. And bragging about times posted by a professional driver is bench racing.

For a don't drive it everyday affordable fun car, Shelby or c8. For a car to live with everyday...awd m4

I had a G80 M3 on order but after 90 days with no production number I tested a bunch of cars, reduced the choice to 981 GT4 vs. GT350, and ended up buying the latter. If you can look past the badge, it's a great dual-purpose sports car. Reviewers regard it as a modern E92 M3. It puts out performance across all metrics (0-60, 70-0, 1/4 mile, VIR Lightning Lap, Nurburgring) equal or better to the 981 GT4 and F82 M4 and it is an immensely satisfying, theatrical driving experience. The Voodoo flat plane crank 5.2L V8 with 8250 rpm redline is really special.

Very nice car. If it had a better interior, I would have bought one myself. Great engine, suspension, exhaust and platform. As a second/weekend/fun track car, I think it's a premier choice.
