2009 Bmw Z4 engine

It was pretty obvious to (hopefully) everyone that with the release of the 335i and the N54 engine that the new Z4 would have the same 3.0TT engine.
I'm guess the 328i engine will have the 3.0i designation on the side and the Z4 with the N54 engine will have 3.5i on the side.

So for a bit of fun let's guess what the weight of the new Z4 will be.

With the outgoing models Z4 3.0si hardtop coupe was listed as 3108 lbs, I would HOPE the new car being marginally larger would not be more than 3225 lbs.
But I'm going to guess it's going to be in the 3240-3280 lbs range. (the retractable hardtop version will add 200 lbs I'm sure).

Gotta say with 3250 lbs and the N54 engine that would make for an awefully quick stock car. Pretty much equal in straight line performance to a 335i with the SSTT on it.
13.0 @ 108 stock would be a reality.

Imagine that car with the PROcede v3 or JB3 on let alone DP's, Intake, exhaust, FMIC and on race gas.
And then the handling would be amazing at that.
Hopefully the 3.5i version won't be more than $2-3K more than the outgoing 3.0si.
Hello sports car.

Cool

Still, even with a TT engine, the Z4 is still kind of heavy for the power. A Z06 weighs less and puts down nearly twice the numbers stock. Some header work, new exhaust, and intake, and you've just put on another 50-60HP on the Z06 for good measure. They need to bring back the CSL designation again.

Hello sports car.
You are wrong in your thinking that the displacements will be on the side.... that is no longer legal in the US and is the reason for the new names on the SAVs.

The Z4 will be sDrive35 (N54) and should have a bump in Hp to the same levels as the new F1 740i in the EU. The DCT will also be featured. Press info was moved until 12/14 or there abouts.

Yes and look at where GM passing all that production cost and R&D got them.... they were passing the buck to lesser models and not investing the same into them.

A CSL is not in the plans for cost reasons, the price to build would far out weigh what people would pay for it since BMW will not distribute costs between models of non-performance distinction. A Z06 costs GM more than they sell it for, and they try to make up for it in other models.

Rather drive a BMW around a track any day than a 'Vette. At the strip that is a different story. HP isn't everything.

Yes, of course.
The only reason the 7 series is getting a bump in power is simply because of it's size/weight and the price you have to pay for the 7 series you should get a bit more power.

Even in this time of economy, somebody buying a 7 series wants V8 like power so 300 hp won't cut it for them, 340 will just be enough to satisfy that need to have more power and should more than enough to give it acceleration just ahead of the 535i.

I do suspect however the whole N54 line will get a small bump (10-15 hp) in power for 2010 via a small increase in boost.

Hello sports car.

I hope its a lot lighter than that. If it's 3200-3300 lbs then it's in the same territory as a 1 series. The smaller dimension will make it more agile but all that mass is still there.

It wont. N54 engine in F01 iz named 740i, while N54 engine in Z4 is named sDrive35i... But that doesn't mean Z4 will be offered with only one N54 engine (in future)

I'm concerned about the added weight from the engine block itself, in addition to weight gains from getting bigger. Not nice.

It would be great if they could maintain the current weight, but its not possible with the N54 unless they like rip panels out of the interior or something lol.

But yeah, it'll still be faster than 335i and marginally faster than 135i (assuming a lower weight). But a Z4 shouldn't be just marginally faster IMO.

I guess it's not having the engine size which is against the law, but having a "wrong" engine size....

For consumer awareness... 3.5 instead of 3.0L TT, or 2.5si when it's actually a 3.0L... things like this... So rather than getting into trouble (they don't follow the engine size anymore...), they just changed the namings...

That makes more sense. Thanks.

I'd say just call these things Z435, Z430, and similarly X635 and X650, and call it a day. all these names with sDrive and xDrive are annoying. pretty soon in addition to the iDrive you'd also have uDrive.
