Ride quality
Hey guys n gals. I just purchased a 2019 M550i X drive with dynamic handling package and 20" 668 wheels with goodyear RFTs. Then I started my 500 mile journey. I thought the ride would be really comfortable and normal road noise. But man it was bad. I drove on comfort all the way and before you ask the tires - front are brand new and rears are 8. Is this normal ?

Hi, I’m on my 9th BMW, 3-series and 5-series. In every case I felt that the suspensions were needlessly overdamped. My 540iMsport is no exception. I guess it’s the price you pay for having the sportiest vehicle in its class. Don’t know if that’s what you’re experiencing, and I’d be surprised if that was the case since you have variable shocks, but if it is I have a suggestion. Get rid of the run flats and lower the tire pressures 4-5psi from recommended values. Works for me. Good luck.

I have a M550i With 19 inch run flats. To me, it's the smoothest riding car that I've been in….To the point I'm spoiled. I'm miserable in any other car that I ride in. I guess I can look forward to an even better ride with non-run flats.

yea, what car did you drive prior?
Don't have experience with Good Years, but it just doesn't feel right with me on a 80k BMW... |

I have dhp and the same wheels with non rft’s, they’re probably the culprit, but even still, pretty surprising.
I cross shopped an E43 and an S6, and found the M550 to definitively be the quietest and most compliant. Honestly to a fault, the M550 isolates one from the road. Not quite as much, but pretty close to an E350 or A6. I test drove two others with dhp and non dhp, likely both with rft’s, though 19” wheels and they were still similar. |

My '22 M550 with 19" Continental run-flats replaced a 2017 Lincoln Continental. I think the BMW rides better than the Lincoln. It is velvety firm but never harsh. It is also much quieter than the Lincoln. I also rent cars often and haven't found anything with a nicer ride than the BMW.
I would love to try some all-season non run-flats but I really have no reason to swap tires for improved ride quality or noise reduction. |

It’s most likely the run flats, probably the number one greatest complaint across all the forums.
I special ordered my car with the 20" 668M wheels with non-run flats. I got the Bridgestone s007 summer tires, and the ride is never harsh, zero vibration and super sticky. I drive in sport mode 90% of the time. The road noise is probably slightly more present than with the 19” wheels, but it is completely acceptable for a beast sports sedan. I've several passengers comment on how quiet and comfortable my car rides. My biggest dilemma at the time of replacement will be to stay with the Bridgestone’s or switch to Michelin Pilots. I cannot explain why, but I find the best overall ride quality to be in adaptive mode.

Three thoughts: - how many miles on the car? Possibly the shocks are worn. - how much air pressure? The dealers always over-inflate the tires. - Even within the RFT world, different brands ride differently. It may just be the goodyears. Before I bought my 550, I test drove another new one with the 20" wheels, which came with lower profile tires. Pretty bad. The one I bought has the 19" wheels with a higher profile tire. It makes a difference.

I had the exact setup as you and put Michelin PS4S tires on and the difference was night and day. The 19" wheels probably dont feel it as much because the sidewall is taller on them vs the 20". The PS4S tire is summer only, but I've got a Winter Set of wheel/tires so keep that in mind. You may want to look into an all season if you plan to drive in Winter. Another thing to check is for bent wheels. The 668 is very prone to bending from potholes. Your local dealership can check that for you. If there is a bend, its about $120 to repair. Ask me how i know......

It’s very odd like others have said. I’d start with the tires. A family member has the f82 so I’m familiar with it. The m550’s ride quality is on a completely different level, let alone worse. They should be worlds apart. Much much smoother, much much much quieter. (To the point where reviewers frequently mark it down)

You didn't answer my air pressure question. Drop them all down to 32 PSI and report back.
You may have to do a tire reset to avoid warnings.

yea not sure if 32 psi is going to help this guy, even if its at 42, its shouldn't be a horrible experience like he is stating.
If its vibrations you are feeling, i'm thinking bent rims... Where are you feeling the vibrations? If its the shocks, the car would ride pretty bumpy but in a weird way lol. Last edited by BMW012; 09-30-2022 at 11:28 AM.. |

Runflats definitely compromise the ride, but probably not to the point of your remarks about being the worst ride ever. Goodyear runflats may be the worst though, very hard.
If you are in search of the best ride, switch to non-runflat summer tires and swap in snows for the winter. If you don't feel like going with summer and swapping, you should at least move to Michelin AS non runflats. You WILL notice a big difference. Big No-No putting two different tires on the same axle. It will screw up X-drive. You should have at least bought two. Runflats are CRAP. You can't even drive on runflats 50% of the time because they get so damaged. More damage than a non-runflat would. It make zero sense. Runflats with no spare when you end up calling a tow truck 50% of the time. Michelin all day. Preferable summer softies. Mine rides like butter with Super Sports and it sticks like glue.

I have a 2018 with DHP and 20" M668 wheels with Michelin PSS tires. I find the DHP to be way too soft and comfortable for my tastes. It is softer than the normal M550iX suspension. If your ride is bad, definitely get all new, non rft tires.
Also if there is vibration, check tire balance, bent wheels (not uncommon) and a bad driveline guibo . |
