Storage compartment next to steering wheel broke

So the little storage compartment in the lower part of the dash immediately to the left of the steering wheel underneath the headlight switch broke on my 2018.

Some little flat spring device fell out of it, and now it is fallen open, and the latch mechanism will not keep it shut. It’s a nuisance when you get in and out, it keeps hitting my foot and because of the material the dash is made of even putting some tape on it to trade temporary keep it shut is not working.

My car is under the extended CPO platinum coverage. I called my dealer to find out if they would cover it. They called me back and said it’s not covered.

I have to touch base again to get the cost of having it repaired, but that sounds like bullshit. I can’t imagine a little storage compartment is where in tear I guess interior components are not covered under the CPO coverage?

I just wanna get the damn thing fixed. Seems kind of shitty they won’t pay for it.

My dealer has been really good up until just recently after Covid. I’ve caught them doing some stuff that I think is shady. I’m wondering if the rest of you believe this is legitimately a non-warranty item on CPO or if they are just jerking me around.

I would expect that to be covered by the warranty to be honest

Sadly the dealer is right I think. The extended warranty excludes covers except the cup holders in the interior. Stupid.

BMW 51456997929 Oddments Tray, Instrument.Panel Driver'S Side - this is an updated part replacing the old part number 51-16-9-378-558

Color: Black. (this part also available in other colors, try changing last 2 digits of part number)

I believe this part you may be able to install yourself with the proper size Torx driver. Looks like possibly a T10.

https://www.bmwpartsdeal.com/parts/b...456997929.html

Also saw an eBay listing, but likely for the original version with design flaw https://www.ebay.com/itm/15491579475...4aAlHoEALw_wcB

This is a common failure in many BMW models. Kinda sad

Didn't they update it with the fuzzy soft material inside like the dot pockets?
My 2017 540 is just plain plastic , no lining

I did a quick search online and did not find any instructions on installing yourself. It does not look like it’s hard to get to. I just don’t know if I have to remove parts of the dash or if it literally just unscrews I’ll talk to my dealer and see what they’re gonna charge me for it. If they’re gonna do a really tiny markup I’ll just let them do it for the convenience but if they’re gonna gouge me I’m gonna do the damn thing myself.

The little tree is honestly kind of flimsy. You would think it would hold up better than this. I literally hardly ever use it. I sometimes put my pistol in there, but that’s it.

That part is covered. BMW, like all warranties, have some odd exclusions.

I posted all of the exclusions a while ago and linked to post below. OP can read the exclusions. My understanding is it is excluded as a “cover” listed as not covered in the Interior exclusion section. Another weird exclusion is motor mounts are excluded from Platinum coverage, but included in lower coverages like Powertrain…

Really sad considering it is a known problem part that likely isn’t all that expensive for BMW. But here we are.

Yes, they did. Mine has felt on the inside in MY2020. Is it more durable? No idea.

I think that may be right but I think it is sleazy for BMW to call it a comprehensive warranty and then make you hit the small print to find out that there are many, many exclusions that did not apply to the OEM warranty.

I would ask the dealership if you bought the item, would they install it for you as a courtesy item?

Agreed. I’d even push on BMWNA if the Dealer balks. As it is crummy and unbecoming of the brand. Feels like they love to nickel and dime you.

Have my car since 2018. Didn't know that a compartiment is there...

Always assumed it was the access door for some fuses and relays 🙈. I feel kind of stupid now, haha.

Ha! My problem is your discovery!

Well, I finally got down on my hands and knees and looked up inside the compartment and it does appear. There are a couple of screws that will easily remove and I bet the entire box just pops out so I’m just going to order a new one and then myself and not deal with the hassle. It’ll probably take five minutes.
