Broken Windshield - Any Recommendations for repair/replace?

Broken windshield - any recommendations? It looks like a pipe or some other object flew off a truck on I-75 this morning and hit my windshield. Any one use SafeLite to repair a G30 windshield with the HUD, etc? Or should you have the dealer replace? Insurance doesn’t cover glass in TN so it’s all out of pocket (due to the number of claims).

Windshields aren’t covered under comprehensive in TN? That’s wild.

There are endless debates on the forums. Some have had successful replacement by Safelite and some have had wind noise issues and issues with driver’s assistance features afterwards. Some have said dealers outsource as well in some areas.

I have full glass coverage in NY with dealership coverage and OEM as well. My plan is the dealership or certified collision center for replacement. Mainly, so I have one place to go if there are any issues with the repair (excessive noise, driver’s assistance issues, etc.).

Wow - lucky it was only the windshield and that it wasn't something bigger.

Glass replacement is 100% covered in Florida and my wife just had the windshield on her 330 replaced by Safelite. They did a great job and they are trained to address all the electronics and they test and certify that all the features are working correctly. Her HUD as well as the camera-controlled features are working fine. You need to tell them to use OEM glass, and as long as the car is 3-4 or less years old they will use BMW glass with no extra charges.

I live in TN and I’ve got a $50 glass deductible on my auto insurance. Just used it for my X7.

Interesting. USAA won’t provide glass coverage. It’s not an option.

That’s really weird. I have Traveler’s for what it’s worth. I have a coworker that switched away from USAA because the rates stopped being competitive, anyway. Not having to worry about glass is a big relief. I’ve used it 3 times in as many years. My agent added it without me even asking (thankfully).

I think carlex is oem glass. Verify they are using that if you can.

It depends on the state. I have USAA in Florida and they have to cover glass 100%, no deductible and no rate increase. They just covered my wife's windshield, no issue. They are very competitive here, however, all insurers in FL are raising rates significantly regardless of your claim history.

When I lived in PA, there was no separate glass coverage. It was covered automatically under comprehensive and subject to your comprehensive deductible. That was with USAA and others.

If it was a chip and Safelite could patch it no deductible and more than that you’d pay your deductible and let that be that.

I’d check your policy as I can’t fathom that it would be excluded entirely…

I’m in NY now and I have a cheap add on to my policy to give me full glass coverage with $0 deductible.

It depends on the state.... some require it, others do not.

Yeah, PA is one of those states that doesn’t require it. NY is one that does. FL is the only one I’m aware of that requires it without any extra charges.

The confusing part here though is it not being covered under comprehensive. I’d imagine all insurers in all states cover it under there? Since comprehensive covers non-collision damage and having windshields in good order would lower collision claims…

It is possible OP doesn’t have comprehensive… But that would be an odd choice on a G30 IMHO… Penny wise and pound foolish that would be.

It makes sense to me that TN doesn’t require any glass coverage. Otherwise, why would mine be a separate rider on the policy (both in TN)?

Is yours a separate rider similar to what I have in NY? My understanding of NY is the coverage is an option that can have a deductible lower than your comprehensive deductible. If I skip the optional coverage though it is covered in my comprehensive coverage.

In PA (which didn’t require coverage) you only had glass coverage with comprehensive and it was subject to the comprehensive deductible. No separate riders and if you had “liability only” you’d be on your own. If your comprehensive had a high deductible you would have a higher bill at play.

My quick googling suggests that PA and TN are the same in how they approached this. So the OP is likely incorrect that insurance in TN doesn’t cover this, but likely that they are insufficiently insured (either liability only or have a comprehensive deductible so high to negate insurance paying).

I have USAA also.
They dont cover glass here in NH, but i've also heard from a few Military buddies of mine that are super pissed at USAA who live in Florida because they are dropping home insurance on several members. I guess it's due to all the hurricane payouts.

I’m sure comprehensive coverage it if you pay your deductible. But I have a separate item, which I’m assuming is a rider, that gives me glass covered at $50 deductible. And my SA said he pays more for the option to have $0 deductible.

I had mine replaced by safelight and they did a good job. It’s made by bmw glass but not branded bmw.

I was uptight but It was zero issue.

I’m sure safelite does a good job. My glass coverage with Travelers is actually run through Safelite. I wanted it done by the dealer just because it’s under warranty and didn’t want any excuses from them later If there is a warranty claim on the sensors or something. They covered it all no problem. But if I were out of warranty, I’d have no problem with Safelite or a local shop doing it.

I used Safelite in Tx for replacement - excellent job, twice. Have HUD and Line Assistance. No issues with HUD - glass has to be HUD ready and that is all there is to it. Lane assistance gave me some trouble with aftermarket windshield — glass was replaced by Safelite at no cost with original BMW as remedy.
It is hard to judge scale on you picture - but my course of action would be to repair it.

Personally, I would have the dealer replace it or have them commission it. I have said this many times, there is nothing like the factory seal when it comes to wind noise or lack there of. It is highly likely that your replacement windshield will come with increased wind noise and you will never get it as quiet as the factory first time seal. I've had mine re-done a crap load of times over the years across cars. This is why would much rather have the repair done to the factory glass if possible, yours is not possible. Dealer provides more recourse and better hand holding when you aren't happy. Then there is the whole coding and calibration thing that the dealer is better at than the Safelite's.

In terms of glass, see how much BMW stamped glass is. I am pretty sure dealer will only do BMW glass, but if they commission someone to come in, the aftermarket glass is often the OEM supplier. You get the same glass without the stamp. Personally, I would pay for the stamp, but that's just me.

Agree with all this, as a matter of preference. I get some people don’t care or that sometimes there are cost concerns. One thing I found out when replacing the X7 windshield - it isn’t unusual for Safelite to use OEM glass because there isn’t a ton of aftermarket glass available for that model and it isn’t unusual for them to send you/the car to the dealer for calibration, anyway. Not sure how much that carries over to the G30, but that’s what I was told when making my claim. And again, that glass coverage I have is farmed out to Safelite by Travelers.

Liberty Mutual here in IL uses Safelite to repair and replace windshields. I have the same experience as others - glass was not BMW stamped. I was totally apprehensive, insomuch, that I got an estimate for out of pocket replacement at the dealership. Estimate was over $4k. The difference for me was way too much just for a windshield.

All things said, my worries turned out to be unjustified. Replacement went fine, no more wind noise than before, no leaks, and HUD calibration was just fine.

GEICO for me. Insurance covered everything at Safelite. They replaced the windshield and recalibrated the ADAS systems including the HUD. Afterwards everything worked fine. I couldn't tell the difference from the original glass on the car.
