Force M550i to cool the oil "hack"
so this guy says you install these things to the car will cool the oil more than it would in stock trim and increase the life of the car
any thoughts? |

Now I’m not a “the BMW engineers know best” guy, having had an E46M3 and an E90M3 with rod bearing, vanos, etc issues. I just don’t see the need on a sedan that you’re not using as a track car.

Yeah, I'm kinda with @Ranger on this one. Those BMW engineers know what they're doing, and I'm certainly not smarter (although I am better looking) than they are.
If you run the oil colder, then it's not (as he said in the video) going to warm up as quickly. Ditto with the lower temp thermostat - you start messin' with that stuff and the computer is going to enrich the air/fuel mixture and retard timing and who knows what else until the car is warmed up. Also, the engine is designed to run on hot oil at a certain viscosity. You start changing those parameters, and who knows what you may end up damaging? Let's not forget, emissions, drivability, all of that stuff is highly dependent on engine temperature. If the car would run better at lower temperatures, then they would have set it up that way at the factory. Cooler oil is not going to help the engine last longer.

What's Up
They program the engines to run at ridiculously high temperatures to achieve marginal improvements in mpg and emissions, at the expense of longevity. It is all about domestic politics in Deutschland.

I did a similar mode on my N54. It took ages to heat up and in winter wouldn't hit what I felt was operational temperature (90c), however it was great in summer as the N54 had no oil cooler and it would mean the oil wouldn't get as hot as quickly when pushing the car hard.
I've not really looked at the oil temps on my M550i but I think it has better cooling overall. |
