Lightbulb ShineOn Auto Detail on Fifth Gear TV last week

Just to let you know that Paul Townsend, the guy behind ShineOn Auto Detail, who has looked after my car over the last year or so, was on Fifth Gear last week doing a piece on car wash comparisons - machine wash, jet wash, and local hand wash...

Pretty interesting... which one do you think caused the least damage???

I watched it Tony - recognised him as your detailer.

Those Astra bonnets were gleaming!

Could not believe a car wash was best, although best of a bad bunch really!

Paul was surprised that car washes came out best as well. A lot of his on screen comments about the relative performance of each method and the results achieved were edited out of the final piece which was disappointing.

Paul's certainly not endorsing car washes (and if any of you put your car through a car wash I'll come and shoot you myself), but on the day it was the lesser of three evils.

It just shows how much damage can come to the paintwork of a car if you don't look after it...

It was scary how may swirls were evident after just one wash - imagine a lifetime of that!!

Sorry Tony but I've never done anything else with mine (or the last).

Will be giving Paul a call in the next little while to do my car as he is quite conviently located to my work! Do you get anything if we mention you recommended him?

Guys, like Tony I've been using Paul for over 12 months now. He is great and I recommend him w/o hesitation. And I get nothing for saying so.

Imagine all those swirls all over your car from one wash at my local BMW dealer. That's what they did to mine using long handle brushes to wash my car.

We washed both cars under the cover of the garage so didn't get wet once!! Did the Audi and the BM... clayed, waxed, sealed... both look fab, especially the little Audi given it's an 8yr old car!!

If you mention that you're off this forum and you've seen my posts, I'm sure Paul will do something to accommodate you a little better!! I personally don't get anything from it, nor do I want anything from it. That way I stay impartial to the whole process!!

Using a Squeegee is not a problem in itself, as long as you know what you're doing with it! The key is to wipe the blade down after every single pass, so that there is not one single bit of grit on the blade. Never put the blade on the ground, as it will pick up all the grit, some too small to really see clearly.

Also, the blade should only be used to push off excess water, and not to dry the car completely. Using a blade to dry a car completely will cause it do drag and therefore score the paintwork. The final drying process still needs to be done with microfibre drying towels or similar (don't use chamois leathers, as they mar the paintwork almost instantly)

Very interesting video. I dont use either of them, always wash the cars myself using two buckets and mitts.
Once you get into car detailing you will never let anyone else touch your car. When my cars are at the stealers for servicing i always make sure that they dont wash or clean it even if they insist.
Its also amazing how many people use fairy liquid to wash their cars too.

I can almost imagine the face of the detailer as you pull out the wire brush and hammerite!

I think I would have to change my pants if I saw anyone taking sand paper to my car...
