Differences with the B58'a

What is the difference between the B58 motors found in the 540’s versus the one found in the M340’s? There seems to be a 40hp bump for the one in the M340 but they both claim to be B58’s.

Strongly considering buying one of these two cars this summer and want to understand how the motors differ and if one is better than the other for any good reason. Thanks.

Worth a view... plus we are getting latest revisions right now, being applied across the models.

Thank you for that. I’m leaning towards the 540 but wanted to get close enough power to the M340 as possible and didn’t know how the 340 was getting the extra power.

540 is awesome. Had one a little over a year. Still have a lot of love for that engine and have it in the X7.

I suspect there is more difference in ride and handling between the two than any real applied power. There are other big differences in the aesthetic and comfort but I suspect you know that.

You going new or used? A really really modest tune would get the HP even with the M340. But you can’t tune size, weight, and wheel base.

I’m currently driving a 2015 FBO 335xi which I’m am going to keep. It will be my wife’s car and mine on the weekends 😏.

I’m sure she’d appreciate a little more comfort to a little more power. Still deciding on buy used, 2021 and up or leasing. Will probably come down to availability more than price. 540 would be an M-Sport model only. Just need to find the right color combo and options. Sounds like the lease deals are long gone for a while.

I went from a 22’ X3 m40 to a 23’ 540. I considered the m340 and test drove it. It’s a nice little fun car to drive but the diff in comfort and ride was evident to me. The 540 felt like a better all around choice. As far as power, I don’t really know since it’s the same engine. Leased for 39 months 3k down 12k miles for $800 a month. It’s an M sport with Shadow line. I think the deals might be worth it since they are trying to get the 23’ off the lot for the LCI coming soon.

There was another forum member that felt like she got a good deal on a lease recently. If you can find a new 2023 540 M Sport, I feel like chances are good they will be motivated to move it. There is a new model on the way and they want all the G30s gone.

FYI, you would have a hard time doing a significant tune on a 2021+ because they locked the computers up pretty tight. But you could do something to add that 40 hp probably easily if you were motivated to do so. Obviously, you take a risk on the warranty.

I got the M performance power and sound kit (MPPSK) for my 540i which matched it to the m340i.
The torque converter, exhaust and tune are different between the two.
MPPSK gave me all in one expensive package.
I believe BM3 stage 1 is the exact same engine tune as the MPPSK tune for $500. Although as someone mentioned above, you need to unlock the ESU on 2021+ models which is around $1500.
MPPSK is good in a sense that is still OEM and you keep the warranty.
If you ever go that root, don’t buy the exhaust tips. They’re really expensive.
Get an exhaust shop to do quad tip of M performance muffler that comes with MPPSK.
I regret not doing that but the MPPSK was a good investment if you ask me.

Good info! I didn’t know they made an MPPSK kit for the newer 540’s. That might be a great option. Thank you!

BM3 Stage 1 is a touch more power and significantly different delivery from MPPSK. However any BM3 license you purchase comes with the actual MPPSK tune in addition to the BM3 OTS tune you purchase. I ran the MPPSK for a few months, Stage 1 pulls so much harder it's shocking.

Interesting. I thought they’re the same.
BM3 does transmission too? With the torque converter and the TSU tune the shifting is amazing.

The X5 is my first white car, it's mineral perl or something. I used to hate white, especially in New England where it always looked dirty or dull, but about 10 years ago, the Audi whites started catching my eye. They were so bright. BMW followed suit. It's perfect for the X5 which is a car I don't want to spend hours detailing or even be conflicted in terms of which car I show more detailing love to. It cleans up well and hides everything.

The Iron spots are definitely new to me. Have not tried the Car Pro Iron X yet (have it though), but looking forward to eliminating them.

The B58 in the X5 is definitely impressive. Solid engine, decent pull, doesn't have to work hard. It's nothing compared to the N63TU2/tuned engine in the M550 though.

540 owner here. Pushing around 420 now with bm3 stage 2 plus. No regrets. I am too big of a guy for a 3 series.

My previous car was 335 also. I like the space and comfort of the 5 series and I second this M Sport model only

I don't need to be in CT, I may make a trip just to come see you one of these days, and of course do some drifting in the Viper.

I think we should all meet up at his house and have a drifting contest.

I'll bring the beer. What could go wrong?
