I know to check the tire pressure and wear, oil, coolant, visual on belts and hoses before taking a long (across the US) road trip but was wondering if there were any other things specific to these M550's that I would need to check?

I would also check tire pressure if you have a spare tire in the trunk.

Does BMW do complimentary coolant top-ups? I know MB does, in addition to tire pressure and oil top-ups.

I take my cars to the dealer every other month or so and get the complimentary top ups. I think that should be good enough for a trip if you're in no-man's-land between service intervals.

Wipers. Get those checked too
