Insulating a small shed/workshop?
Guys,
I bought my first house 4 years ago, it came with a car port at the end of my driveway 6m deep and 3m wide. Anyway I built a couple stud walls at the back, 3m deep and 3m wide and put a door in the side which opens into the garden so its like a shed. It's a really simple construction 4 large wooden posts in the corners and cement board cladding on the outside and thats about it with a large pitched roof above which I have boarded out and use for storing all sorts. Anyway I am now planning to run electricity to it, I laid a cable in anticipation when I did the patio a couple years ago. only issue is the internal walls I just boarded up with OSB when I built it, I need to take them off to run the cables anyway (they're only screwed on) I've priced up some insulation board to fill the walls and ceilings in there and its the best part of £1k... might be a silly question but is it actually worth me insulating what is effectively a shed? Realistically I spend little time in there but I do store some nice bikes, tools etc so if its a case of minimising damp etc... basically I'm looking for someone to convince me spending this money will be worth it. |

Unless you are using it to work in a lot, I wouldn't bother TBH.
You won't keep the damp out just by insulating it a bit. You would need to go a lot further to do that. But if you insist, then 'jabolite' boards are a cheaper way. Basic polystyrene boards and come in lots of thicknesses and U-values. |

Two approaches :
1. Don't insulate. If you do this, make certain that the room has plenty of natural ventilation so that condensation gets dispersed back into the atmosphere (vents on 2 different sides to ensure a throughput of air, ideally) 2. Insulate. If you do this, you'll need to ensure positive ventilation (i.e. extractor fan of some sort) along with some heating, to ensure the condensation gets removed. |

Waste of time...
Our new garage is uninsulated and I've got all my gym stuff in there (power cube, various bars, c600kg of plate weights, loads of grip stuff etc) All our white goods are in there as are all my tools etc... Just put up with the cold and when I'm in there over the colder months etc; I use a small electric fan heater to take the edge off
