Pad for HPDE?

I've got a track day coming up and was wondering if you guys think that the Hawk HP Plus pads would work IF I'm running street tires. If I were running an R-compound I would probably go to the HT-10s or something like that.

I'm running full course VIR and I don't think of that course as being really hard on brakes.

TIA,
Barry

OEM > HP+
You could try the Ferodo DS2500.

Try http://www.coolcarbonperformance.com (S/T series). I went thru 5 sets last year on a track that is brutal on brake pads. The S/T have a MOT of 1112 F and they don’t deposit junk on the rotors or squeal like the DS2500 do. You will not be able to make these pads fade with street tires even on a very very demanding course. They have good linear modulation with outstanding release qualities. They work as well as OEM dead cold and they can be used for the street. I only wished they made them for BBK because the DS 2500 don’t cut it.

There are a lot of very good pad materials out there, PFC01s at the top - but sadly I have found very little available for the E9XM3.

Two club racing compounds available (MOT over 1400)
Pagid RS19 (F/R)
Hawk HT10 (F)

One "cross-over" compound (mot around 1100)
Ferodo DS2500 (F/R)

I wish there were more. Please let me know if you find anything.

I would strongly advise against the HP+ at high speeds. They have more torque than your run of the mill OE pad, but their MOT is just under 900 degrees, and at the MOT the friction goes away abruptly - not what you want for safety on a track.

+1 on the PFC-01s

Nothing better on the track. I've run them on the street when too lazy to remove them after track days. They work well cold. Downside on the street is they can be embarrassingly noisy.

If the PFC-01s aren't available when old man winter leaves us, I'll probably use the Pagid RS19s. I've heard nothing but praise for them.

I've had bad experiences with Hawk pads crumbling (blues, no others).

Decided to cut to the chase and called Hawk. The person I spoke to recommended the Blue pad so I'll probably go with that. I like the PFC's but they cost 2x the Hawks....

Thanks for your help!

Please ask the corner workers I sent running for their lives what they think of Hawk Blues. This happened to me twice with Hawk Blues. Never with PFCs, and I've run many more times as many PFC pads as Hawk blues.

I suspect the cheaper pads will end up wearing out much faster, but don't have any data to back that up. If that's true, the total costs over time might not be that different. Someone with more experience should comment on this. I went through a set of Carbotechs in a matter of 4 track hours, and I suspect the RS-19s would have lasted longer.

My PF-01s typically lasted two-three weekends (8-12 hours) plus a few thousand street miles. This is dependant on how far down you are willing to wear the pads. I'd say I'm less than half thickness after 8 hours.

You shouldn't run track pads to less than 30 percent of original thickness. They start transferring more heat to the calipers when they get thin.

Just curious - were you running an Rcompound tire? If so you can punish brakes alot more than I will with my street tires - just not enough grip....

The Hawk Blues were on a BMW 2002 at 2200 pounds on R compound tires (the origian BFG-R1s, pre-Michelin). It's kind of an apples to oranges comparison to the e9x. Still, I would go with the Pagids or PF-01s if they're available.

Good point. Will keep that in mind. When I wore the carbotechs out, I really wasn't keeping an eye out for wear since I didn't expect them to wear out that fast. I obviously learned a good lesson there.

Real big fan of the Performance Frictions. Had them on my old track car with stop tech brakes and they haven't disappointed on the M.
