No Sunroof for me, please
I have heard that the sunroof will be standard on the 135i in the US (Benzomatic on VW Vortex site) and I am deeply concerned. I really hope that either this is untrue or that sunroof will be a delete option.
I much prefer the lower weight (right at the top of the car where it does the most damage), fewer rattles and leaks, clean lines, and most importantly the increased headroom in a non-sunroof car. This last item is extemely important for wearing a helmet at a Drivers Ed track event. Can anyone shed any light? |

You can order them without sunroofs? I am not sure about the 135i coupe, but my dad does not like the sunroof and has ordered his past two cars directly from the dealer and got it without the sunroof. I agree the added weight is a negative.

Oh no. I'm with you guys on concerns about weight but buying a BMW without a sunroof for me is a big no. Granted I'd probably use it a handful of times, its going to KILL the resale values. I mean think about it, why do you think the 3 series have them as standard now. Because all the competitors have them. If my 2001 Jetta had a sunroof, my 2009 BMW will have one. I'll ditch some extra weight by getting rid of those standard run-flats.

What is the point of having a sunroof if you never use it though? I think they should allow you the option of getting it or not. Besides we all know cars are bad investments for the most part so who cares about resale value? I plan on leasing mine so I could care less what it's worth at the end of my lease.

Not a standard feature on the 328i but is standard on the 335i. I would expect the 1er will follow the same pattern.
But I agree it should be an option on the 135i.

To me it's pointless and unneccesary weight but to each his own. How would that be bringing the brand to the gutter because it doesn't have a sunroof? If people want the open air feel that bad they can get a convertible.

At least in the US, even a 328i comes with a moonroof standard. Like I said, I don't think there is a fixed roof BMW in the US market without one standard.

Regarding resale value. Sunroofs have been standard on the US-market Porsche 911 for a couple decades now and the rare sunroof delete cars (no price break on purchase) are now worth more money in the used market due to the desire of those who track the cars or need the headroom.
BTW, they stopped offering sunroof-delete for the first time in 2005 for Porsches. Many folks are buying the more expensive GT3 RS version simply to lose the stupid sunroof which is now mandatory on the US-market GT3. |

Interesting...I think that is the best way to do it, make it standard so the people who want more features get them, but give us the option to delete it if we want too.

I guess the next question will now be, should they charge you for the delete? I'm coming from a convertible. I need my sunroof. I dont think the 135i would mirror the same higher resale values of the Porsche.

Maybe not, but for the right buyer your used car will hold strong appeal. It will certainly make your car stand out from the crowd (in a good way) for the right buyer in the used market. I don't think it will make selling the car more difficult (on the contrary)...

I agree with you. BMW North America might not. They can say, "bmw's without sunroofs are hard to get off our lots" and you know how bad they want to move these cars. I'm sure they have some type of say. Just like it is so rare to see a barebones 3 series on a BMW lot.(At least here in Florida) I'm frequent at bmw dealers and their events snooping around.

BMW is making a big push for the lightweight Carbon Fiber roofs on their M6 and new M3 cars - their marketing materials explain the benefits of lowering the center of gravity by lightening the roof (at great cost to BMW), so I think it will fit right into BMW's modern image...

I like the sunroof (I'm 6ft tall). I've never has a sunroof rattle or leak, and I doubt that the extra weight (50lbs the most) will make any difference at the racetrack.
