Frustrated at Paint Chips

IS it ME? Or does BMW paint chip very easily.

I am so frustrated. I have 2020 M340i and it's getting stupid with all the teeny teeny pinhole paint chips all over the car. I have owned lots of cars. Neve seen this before. Yes, I have gotten chips here and there from rocks and stuff. But this seems a bit ridiculous.

Already, I had the front bumper repainted at the BMW dealer and it's full of small chips again (just a few months). WTF.

I can't keep paying to fix all these chips.

The chips appear to only go to the primer. Not all the way through.

What is the best way to handle this? Is there a good way of filling chips with the touch up paint? I just want to make sure the chips don't start becoming BIGGER chips (two of them are already).

I LOVE my M340i and this is very very frustrating to me.

Anyone else face this? What do you do?

I am going to order the BMW touch up paint for my car . . but I don't want a bunch of unsightly bumps and pimples all over my hood and bumper.

Anyone have any experience with DR ColorChip?

I was going to order the touch up paint directly from BMW, but then I found this video. I like that it has 'SealAct' paint blender . . . . I think that makes it much easier and look better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0-TBK0JVEc

If you watch this video, I recommend you skip the first 3 mins . . that's all junk lol. But- the paint chip process looks pretty easy.

Yes, Dr. Color Chip is the way to go. Much better than traditional touch up paint!!!

Put PPF on the front. It's worth it!

This… the BMW paint chips very easily, it’s not just you. No way around it, just pay for PPF which should take care of your ongoing issue.

Dr. Colorchip works well. The actual paint color was spot-on for my Sunset Orange. It's way better than other touch up paints, but you need to keep your expectations in check: it isn't 100% perfect. It dries to a flat sheen, so if you are right up on the panel, you will see the touch up spots.

Dr. Colorchip works fantastic, however, the simple solution is to have a full PPF installed up front (bumper + bits, fender, hood, and even mirrors).

Sounds like you better get PPF for full front. Unless you are going to stress out every time when you find new paint chip appeared.....

Ive got so many paint chips. So many. Too many to use any kind of chip repair on all of them. It will look terrible. At some point if it bothers me enough I will just have to have the front bumper repainted.

Exactly, all my vehicles have ppf on the full front (bumper, lights, hood, fenders, mirrors, a-pillars & front of sunroof) and along the rocker panels/door sills. We just picked up a '22 X3MC for my wife and that will be headed to Xpel this week.

Thanks for everyone's input. I can see the consensus is to PPF the front bumper and hood.

I just did a quick google . . . Gosh Darn . . that is an expensive solution haha. Ehhhhhh. . . . Guess I need to bite the bullet.

First Step: I ordered the Dr ColorChip paint system. I will fill the chips and then re-assess. That needs to be done anyway.

Over in the Lexus forums people say the new Lexus paints chip easily, too. I think it's nothing to do with the individual brands and more to do with the environment. If there are lots of small stones in the road or dump trucks carrying gravel, etc. then you are going to get them unless you dedicate all your attention to avoiding them. That is, you will have them. I had a few on my IS 500 with less than 1,000 miles at the time. I thought I could procrastinate putting PPF on a little bit, but I was wrong. Just get PPF after touching up the existing spots.

Dr. Color Chip has a kit that is specifically designed to handle exactly the problem you describe.

More than a decade ago BMW, along with virtually every other manufacturer, switched to a more environmentally friendly water-based paint system. The new paint is not as chip resistant as the previous paint.

I aded PPF to the whole front end, the hood & mirrors and tinted the windows. Cost me $1,900. Well worth it, my car will be 1 year old in Oct with no visible chips.

All of my cars (lease or direct purchase) go directly to my PPF installer right after delivery. They also get a window tint right away.

Actually my M340 is on its 3rd set of PPF. Luck would have it, we had some sort of an acid rain and luckily only the front or my car was exposed to it as it was in a carport type of an area. Only the PPF on the hood would have to be replaced.

2nd set was when a truck dumped some sort of a sharpnel all over the road when i was going 70 mph and made the front end of my car look like that i just drove through a shredder of some sort. PFF did its job and protected the paint on the bumper & hood as well as my laser lights. We could not believe that the paint and the lights were not damaged after we removing the film. My grill however needed to be replaced.

I am on my 3rd set now and very thankful to have it. It was just bad luck with the M340 as I never had to replace any PPF on any of my cars before. Our Audi SQ5 is almost 10 years old and its front looks brand new.

You get the point, if paint chips bug you, get a PPF from day one.....a good quality one from an expert installer. Its not something you want to cheap out on either.
