Switching from 19" RFT to 18" None RFT

So back in Febuary of this year I purchased a 2023 540i in standard sport trim with the standard 19” all season RFT tires as I wanted the best possible ride quality available for the time. I honestly wish I could have ordered the dynamic damper control without having to go with the M-Sport.

This past week I pulled the trigger and ordered the OEM 18” rims that came standard on the 540i back in 2021 and ordered a set of new Michelin Non, RunFlats tires. Gonna have them installed this Thursday and cannot wait to see the difference in ride quality.

😁

please let us know how it goes, and if the 18s clears the brakes.

It should be a perfect fit as they’re the same rims that came with the 2021 540i.

If you have the silver (Continental) calipers, the 18" wheels will fit without problem. They were standard on my 540d xdrive. Once I can justify the replacement of my GY runflats, I will go to standard tires. It's amazing what a nice suspensiion lies beneath those stupid runflats, paricularly when mounted on those useless 19 and 20-inch wheels.

The 18” wheels will fit perfectly. The 2021 540i came with them standard. I have the standard brakes. I will report back tomorrow.

So finally had the new 18” rims and Michelin Primacy Tour A/S NONE RunFlats installed today.

What a big difference it makes in a smoother, more absorbent, and a quieter ride quality it provides over the standard 19” Runflats the 540i came with.

Drove it on local highways and no vibrations. I HIGHLY recommend this for those with a 2022/2023 Sport line 540i if you’re looking for that extra touch of refinement.

The wheels are obviously OE from BMW, but I don't recall ever seeing them. Are they from the second generation of G30's?

I've run 18inch non run flats oem from new.

Never had a flat, nor pothole damage. Super ride w/o Msport adjustable suspension.

Love your wheels though. Much nicer than mine

Yes. They became standard wheels in the USA for 2021 for the LCI 530i/540i. Then for 2022/2023 the 540i came standard with 19”.

I am going to do the same with my 23 530 Drive. I don't find the ride on the 19s with RF horrible, but my seat comfort with a hard bottom cushion (Multi-contour with Dakota) annoys me. I wonder if switching tires will actually make any difference in seat comfort on long drives. Love your color. Is that Skyscraper Grey? That's the color of my new 23 530.

Yes, I ordered it with Skyscraper Grey and Sensafin Cognac. I plan on keeping this car for a good 8-10 years so wanted the interior to wear as little as possible. I had a 2018 540i with Dakota and the leather after 3 years didn’t look bad but you could see it was worn. The Sensafin still looks brand new as I’d no one had sat in it as of this day.

As far as ride comfort you’re correct, the 19” with RunFlats didn’t ride horrible but with 18” and Non RunFlats there’s that extra bit of suspension refinement over brick roads etc. just feels so smoother to me.

With G30/G31 there is also working "third" way about tires. 19" RunFlats are typically horrible. Also 18" rf is too. Altough them works fine with flat brand new highways with fast driving. For example in German free limit Autobahns RF`s feels super steady in very high speeds. But scandinavian rough and "trailed" road totally kills fun with driving.

Im using one step oversized 19" and these works perfectly with G30. Size is 245/45R19 non-rf. Tyre is little bit taller and it looks very very nice under car. And deviation of speedo is exactly zero. I would say these are perfect compromise with look and comfort. Also wider rear works (I have it), but 245 is absolutely better if you are finding comfort feel.

Does that tire size increase ground clearance a bit over the stock 19s? I just bought some 18 inch wheels for winter but don't want to lower the ground height at all. If I could increase it, would be my goal living in mountain roads in Colorado. The X1 would have been a more logical choice but handling and lack of being able to downshift without paddle shifters (M sport only with stiff seats).

It’s the same ground clearance.
