2008 Pontiac G8 to start at $27,595
http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/02/p...art-at-27-595/
How is this relevant to this forum? Quote:
With the enthusiast Pontiac hitting $30k, there is much less pressure on BMW to lower the 135i price much. Is $5-7k more for a more prestigious, better built, better finished, better looking, better performing, beat-it-in-all categories car? You bet it is. |

Ehh, I see the point you are trying to make, but I would never ever in a million years cross shop the 1 series with this car regardless of its price or performance. That being said justifying the 1 series price based on the G8's does not work for me.

One can see the V8 Pontiac as a "competitor" to the 135i...but as far as target audience, they are somewhat similar...Enthusiasts are the market for a smallish high performance car...quote] the g8 is smallish?; it's a freakin' boat! |

I agree that $35k+ for the 135i isn't unrealistic, but I must agree with Lips that Pontiac G8 pricing just isn't relevant. I can't imagine many (any?) folks cross-shopping a 196" 4-door sedan and a 171" 2-door coupe.

anything that i personally cross-shop with the 1er is going to be lighter(if not physically smaller); just read the bad news that the reincarnation of the honda crx has been pushed back 2 years to 2011.

I don't want to start a fight, but I am amazed at how out of touch the American car mfg's are with the times and the public.
Stop with the V8's. Sometimes I wish gas would stay at $4

I really don't see how one can. First of all, the G8 only comes in Automatic. That's huge. Anyone who actually wants to drive a car is out. Also, 40 less hp. Oh, and I doubt the handling or breaks or modability will be anything close.

I think a lot of folks on this forum over estimate the number of true driving enthusiasts that purchas any particular car. The idea that the 135i is worth $5/6k more than the Pontiac is only valid to those of us who can tell the difference from behind the wheel.
The success of the135i or any other mass market car is far more dependent on it's appeal to the average driver who buys a certain car to make a statement about the image they are trying to project. So even though the Pontiac will certainly not be able to run with the 1er, the fact that it's a V8 rear wheel drive "performance car" will make it a competitor in some people's eyes. And the bottom line is that a lot of people are not going to fork over an extra $5/6k just to say they drive a BMW. |

I have to disagree with many on this one. This is exactly *one* of the kinds of cars that GM needs to be making. If it lives up the performance and handling expectations, it will be a fantastic car for those looking for a larger high performance sedan. $3/gallon is not enough to deter most people in car buying decisions, as has been proven many times over recently. Additionally, it's expected to receive GM's version of cylinder deactivation for improved fuel efficiency.
As Carlos Goshn of Nissan replied when asked why Nissan was getting into big trucks at this time, "No one can predict where gas prices are going to go so we have to cover the spectrum of what consumers want now and may want in the future" (paraphrasing). He's right, and GM needs to do the same. In my opinion this car shows a bright spot in GM's future, not another failure, as does the Volt concept (as long as the lithium ion battery technology comes through and GM can deliver the product, which they insist they can). Frankly, I see more good things in GM than I have in the 28 years I've been a flaming car nut. Up until the past few years, I was a serious GM hater. Now I see some promise. I'm just hoping they can delivery on that promise. I would really like to see the U.S. automobile industry successful and innovative again. |

It is up there with the BMW easily. Plus, the V8 and efficiency isn't going to be too much less MPG than the BMW real world driving. The only advantage is the turbo configuration allowing tuning/boost and still get same/better gas mileage. But the G8 is going to be very fast and there will be TT kits out in short order for them for $6-8K maximum investment due to the engine platform and quantities they make and after market tuning that will be available. It is going to be a serious machine with very good build quality. |

A 35k G8 is related to a 1series just as much as a 35k SUV. Sheesh, I cant believe these two are even being compared.
