custom upholsery
Rather than purchasing the Prem. Pkg. to get the color leather I want (and a less than top quality leather), I am considering just getting leatherette and getting a shop to upholster my seats in a leather of my choice. Has anyone had any experience with this and any ballpark estimates about the cost? Also, any recommendations for a shop I could contact for info would be appreciated. Thanks, Cody

i know at my work we sublet alot of jobs to an upholster company, to be honest your more inlikley going to spend more money than you would if your were to just buy the package, for a good decent job to be done takes time which = money and lot's of it...

yeah, that would get expensive fast, and the fit and finish would more than likely be questionable
what do you not like about the bmw leather? I think its the perfect compromise in terms of durability, grippiness, softness and pliability

IMHO that only makes since if you are going to just do inserts. Like leatherette with alcantara inserts. You should be able to do that easily for $1500. Otherwise you are better off paying for the BMW leather for $1500.

Front and rear seat reupholstery, plus door inserts with a high quality leather will cost you more than $3000. Depending on the hides you choose, you're likely looking at $5000.
The recaro replacement option only gets you two front seats. You would then have mismatched rear seating and side panels. You're going to pay >$1200 each for those seats too. |

If places like Custom Soft Trim or Katzkin create a leather pattern (replace the leatherette seat covers with a leather cover) for the 1 Series (I doubt it, because they normally don't do BMW's as they have the OEM leather option for those same seats) their price would be in the $1000 to $2000 depending on how greedy the installer is.
Their leather is pretty good quality and texture and the fit and finish of the installation and pattern is as OEM as you could find. Normally the door panels are included, and plenty of colors to chose from. I thought about that possibility also but I will wait and see if Lemon leather will be offered in the 1 Series as a Priority 1 option. That's the only leather color that I like in the 1 Series. :w00t: |
