BMW Portable Navigation System

BMW offers a Portable Navigation System as a dealer installed accessory based on the Garmin nuvi 360 for the 1 and 3 Series. The entire system costs $750. If you already have a Garmin nuvi 300 Series system, you can buy the mounting device for $175. This is the best looking installation for a portable navigation system that I can find.

http://allcarsreview.com/2007/11/24/...gation-system/

For a moment, I was getting really interested in this system and saw in as an alternative to the $2100 iDrive Navigation, but then I read the installation instructions for the 3 Series and it mentions that you must drill 4 holes. I would hate to have to drill holes into the dash of a new BMW. The mounting device for the 3 Series attaches on a vertical service as opposed to a horizontal surface in the 1 Series.

Installation Instructions for 3 Series:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...2&postcount=13

Does the 1 Series mounting device require drilling into the dash? I searched for installation instructions for the 1 Series but I couldn't find it. If you can find the installation instructions for a 1 Series, can you post the link or attachment here?

Awesome post, Eric!! That certainly is a clean install. Since we don't get the bin on the dashboard, if you opt out of iDrive/Nav, that seems to be a great option....

$175 For the mount seems a wee tad steep though, and I HATE that you have to drill multiple holes in the dashboard on that e90 install. Maybe the 1er installation will allow it to be uninstalled without having holes front and center.

I doubt the 1er will be any different from the e90. Just use suction cups :]

Yes it does. The above picture shows the installation on a 1-series. No holes.

Thanks Kurvenfahrer. Do you have any more info on it, like have you seen this mount before, or have 1er install instructions? I'm specifically wondering if it will fit their 16:9 widescreen Nuvi models, rather than the older 4:3 ones.

My thoughts exactly.
I only took a short glimpse in the installation manual at my local dealer, so I don't know if it works with other Garmins. But - and that ruined it for me - there is only power-supply, no tmc-antenna!

It's a Garmin Nuvi 350/360, painted black and rebranded with BMW on it. Yes, you can use it other cars. If you get the Garmin branded one, it's less than $300 online.

Question

Could you buy the mounting brackets for your car if you already have the GPS?

Is that a statement? :iono: The bracket does not have Bluetooth but select Garmin Nuvi GPS units, including the 360 used in the BMW Portable Navigation System, do include Bluetooth.

I recall seeing that the 1er mount and the 3er mount for the Nuvi differ. The 3er mount requires you screw 4 screws into the dash, where the 1er mount supposedly does not have that requirement. There's a thread on this site with the 3er installation instructions, showing how you screw into the dash in a location that if you remove the bracket, you'll have 4 holes staring at you, front and center.

There's no way in hell I'd screw 4 screws into the face of my dash for a mount...

I'm just currious has anyone done this yet? I have a Garmin 350 already and a 135i on order without Nav \ iDrive so I'm wondering if the install kit will work and if I can avoid drilling 5 holes. If so I'd love to see a photo of it installed.

Thx,
Michael

I looked up the repair instructions. There is drilling involved, and a small piece of the cluster trim has to be cut off. It doesn't look too difficult.

edit: I just looked, and the holes aren't in the middle of the dashboard, like the E90.
