slightly modified under warranty m550i - am I a moron?
Am I a fool to buy one of these with some factory warranty remaining if there were like slight mods such as a exhaust, downpipe, etc? How at risk does that put me?
Thanks guys, Matt |

I think the general consensus is that the warranty will only be voided if the modifications are relevant to the issue.
for those modification my guess is that anything affecting the powertrain could potentially impact the warranty. If you have an engine issue, BMW could turn around and say its because you have made changes to the exhaust system. Whereas, if the sunroof broke, those mods would not have any bearing on it and I would expect BMW to honour the warranty. That would be a reasonable expectation but I guess there is always a risk BMW or the dealership could be unsympathetic. If you have any concerns, then stay away from any modifications. Is the car being sold by a BMW dealership? I'm guess probably not as it has mods. The other concern is that a car that has been modified, you don't know how it has been treated or whether it has had any others previously and reverted back for sale. A modded car is more likely to have been driven heavily whihc may increase wear and tear . So you have to balance the risks. At least make sure you have all teh facts before making an informed decision. |

Great points and I thank you for that. That brings me to aftermarket warranty, which I would be buying on whatever I bought regardless - would an aftermarket warranty cover a problem related to the say aftermarket exhaust or something? Anybody on here have experience with that?

You could see what warranty the mods themselves offer, but they might have been limited to the original buyer. |

No issues with exhaust in terms of cat back. Downpipes are a can of worms on many different fronts including warranty.
