Regret not going with Premium Hi-Fi, now what?

When we ordered our 135, no one knew what was with the premium sterio, and our SA assured us that it was not Logic 7. I was thinking that the $800 is better spent elsewhere, and just order the standard.

I'm pissed because the premium system is getting great reviews...so now what do we do?

Can we complain and get the premium system installed at the dealership? What is the best way to upgrade the standard stereo?

Any thoughts?

In Australia the professional radio comes standard (6 speakers), upgrade to 10 speakers is about $1K and the logic 7 is about $2K (aussie dollar is not far behind the US at the moment). Sounds like the US are getting these options much cheaper than us. I'm still not 100% sure whether to ring the dealer and change my order but I think I'll go with an aftermarket amp/speakers/sub for the same price as the factory options or cheaper. I'll stay with the head unit to keep the ipod, bluetooth interface functional. If I'm careful I can remove these items when I get rid of the car (if I ever do!) and not lose the money by including the factory options which will not add that much value for resale.

My friend, I actually think your better off. For that $850 bucks you can now upgrade your speakers and AMP. Your really only paying for the DSP surround, which to me seems artificial anyways. Now you can tune it with your ear with a nice crossover+ amp type set-up.

You're better off either way going with aftermarket stuff. Get some DLS speakers, a decent amp, good head unit and a good quality 10" sub. Remove the rear speakers so the bass can come through and the soundstage will also improve. Just make sure your installer knows what they are doing, most installers are horrible.

My friend, I completly dissagree with you!

The 135i comes with 8" subes directly under the seats. Replacing these with better quality, less ditortion aftermarket subs is better than putting them in the trunk.

Riding around town with your trunk "thumping" is a sign of poor design, when you can have the cabin hitting ultra lows.

There is absolutly no need to replace the head unit! We are talking about sound, all an aftermarket HU does is add glitz and drama.

There was mention of a company called BSW on the other thread that sales upgrades for factory components in BMW's. You might consider this if you want to keep the steering wheel controls.

Not to mention that the RAD2 is a control module, and removing it will prevent the car from being updated.

I think you'll find that whilst the 1 series have 8" holes underneather both the driver and passenger seats the actual 'sub' is only 6 inches.

I'm an audiophile of sorts here in Australia and I've looked into a number of options for my 118i and wanting to keep the look absolutely stock. (I've spent over 15k on audio and installs in my previous car over the years and I'm over it!).

As far as I'm aware, even though the standard subs are 6' in an 8' hole, Earthquake are the only OEM speaker manufacturer that make an 8' sub that will fit in this space. I was looking at the possibility of changing the stock 6' subs out from under the seats, replacing them with Earthquake 8's and putting Focal 100KRS 4" component speakers in the stock mid and tweeter locations running off a decent 4 channel amp and keeping the stock head unit. Some will argue using the stock unit limits your sub control etc but this is easily fixed with an aftermarker control unit fitted into the glovebox (Alpine for eg.).

The audio shop I use (mainly deals in high end gear, Imagine Dynamics, Dynaudio, Tru Tech etc) has fitted a 135 with this system and it's supposedly a great improvement. The biggest issue I face is having to 'cope' with earthquake subs and focal speakers which are not a preferance at all. But to keep it stock in appearance, from what I understand - is the only option.

Just a clarification, Premium sound includes improved metal core Harmon Kardon speakers all around, twice the Amp power, use of the optical bus for all amp/HU communications, and the inclusion of Logic 7 DSPs. All this is documented in the stickys at the top of the thread.

For those who have selected the US "standard" system, you can still upgrade it using the BMW supported Alpine upgrade, or aftermarket. If you are choosing between them for a new car, research the differences here, there are many threads covering it.

That's not correct... the BMW Alpine amp upgrade is only applicable with the Stereo system (no OEM amp), not available in any USA 1 Series.

The US "standard" system is the HiFi (analog OEM amp).

I love my Premium Hi-Fi system. That said, I've also modified my Integra's sound system with JL Audio speakers all around, a new head unit, and amp (no sub).

They both can get very loud without static or distortion. The subs in my 135 aren't horribly loud. Honestly, I'd like them a bit stronger (not that much more, I've ridden in my friend's Dodge Charger and all you can hear in that car is the bass). The difference here in the factory to aftermarket is the factory has a better quality. They can both get loud, but the clarity in the 135 is better.

It could also be the design of the two cars. The Honda was never really meant to have a thumping sound system, while the BMW is a little luxury, with a little sport. All-in-all I'm happy with both. Just make sure you get your aftermarket work done somewhere reputable (I did and haven't had a single problem; but a friend of mine had his done at a discount one and has had numerous problems). That being said, you can get a nice aftermarket system, but really think about subs and if you decide on getting them where to place them.

actually I dont have premium sound because honestly I don't spend enought time in my car to focus that much on music quality. Plus the standard audio quality on the 1 is better than my 06 3 with standard.

I listened to both before I ordered, the "premium" audio didn't sound $875 better than the standard audio, both sound pretty good, better than the harmon/kardon on my E46 M3's, if you use the USB drive to play your music it sounds very good.
