What's the best first mod?

Trying to figure out what I should do first...engine tune (Dinan?), performance intake, cat-back exhaust, downpipes? What's the right step-by-step for the best performance?

There isn't necessarily a right procedure but rather a how deep is your wallet.

Get a base line dyno

1. Do one of the simple tunes and a get better filter. Then get another dyno. Ask yourself is this enough.

2. Do the rest of your list and don't forget larger intercooler. Get another dyno. Ask the same question as above.

3. If #2 is not enough then get a faster car.

A track day pass. See how well it handles in stock form...it'll make you easily decide what mod you want to do next.

I'd personally opt for suspension over power. Nothing better than to have nice handling when on a track or the twisties....unless you're just into sprints from red light to red light.

I read about an intercooler mod that allows an extra pound of boost to reach the intake. It makes the inlet and outlet of the intercooler more efficient. Has anyone else heard of this? Not a big gain but could be a good start.

I vote:
1. suspension
2. tires non-runflats
3. ECU reflash
4. upgraded intercooler

I won't be even considering downpipes as a mod on my car, the turbos are too small to be pushing them any harder. I'm pretty much sold on the Dinan flash since it picks up your warranty coverage, something that I'm sure will prove useful later.

First one should be CDV (for 6sp)

M3_Dust, the Dinan (or any) tune will push those turbos harder more than a set of DPs will. I like your list though! I'll have the top 3 done by next week.. already have 1&2

This might be for another section of the site, but what are some recommended suspension mods...and just to keep the thread in here, who makes larger intercoolers for the 1?

I've got the short shifter and CDV this weekend. As I think I've written elsewhere, I got to the Canadian Gp in June every year, and I always like to get a little something for that trip...I was thinking a Dinan tune, but I was looking at the thread about the guy going for the One Lap of America crown and thought maybe I'm missing something.

Like a K&N filter or something? Or a whole intake?

for me it will be...

1. tint
1.5 cosmetics mirror covers, rear diffusers, performance kidney grill.

then wait for the break in period and really asses what I think the car needs... My guesses are listed below

2. coilovers
3. sway bars
4. ecu re flash
5. tires, maybe wheels

Go with whatever tune you want... They are being sponsored by AA, and that's the reason they are going with that tune. (although I hear it's a good piggyback)

Seems like the chip is the best first mod?

At this time my mod priorities are:

1) Clear paint protection
2) Tint
3) CF Performance Spoiler
4) CDV
5) Alum Pedals
6) Performance Kidney Grills?

As soon as I get the car its going to the tint shop. Putting on the carbon fiber spoiler and maybe few other carbon pieces.
After break in going for the dinan tune. Once the run flats wear ditching those and going with normal tires.
