JB2H installed today - quick review
I was expecting this to be delivered on Monday, but the mail person gave me a pleasant surprise.
I took my laptop out to the garage, and brought up the installation guide. It took about 45 minutes to do the JB2 (with one "H pill"), and then button everything up. Once I did that, there is a new solenoid bypass arrangement that people have been testing, and I decided I would use that as well. It supposedly smooths out delivery to a stock-like manner. That piece took another 15 minutes before everything was buttoned up. So, I start the car.. no fanfare or idiot lights. Back out of the driveway, no indication of any difference at all in sound, mild throttle application.. all still smoooooth as silk. Get out on the main road, which is a fairly straight (boo), undulating/hilly (getting better), country road (okay.. that's good). Get out still driving normally, through 1st.. shift to 2nd normally. Then I get on it. WOT. There's 2 words that I actually yelled out loud... HOLY and S***. I thought I should back off instantly, but held it to 6000 rpm.. power shift.. get on it again. Then I realized that I was at watching the speedo go from 60 (at shift) to very rapidly going up to 80-> before I scared myself and backed off. This is a straight country road, mind you, not a highway. (saw nobody else the whole time - like 6 seconds worth) I did this probably a dozen times pulling from various gears and speeds, and it's stupid fast. You'd need a butt replacement if anybody's butt dyno didn't instantly register the additional doses this thing is giving now. After a dozen blips to 60-80 from 0, 10, 20, 30 mph, I had a speed induced headache, and came home. The power is there from all rpms, like stock does, no limps, CEL, fanfare... all good. No plans to get a dyno done any time soon, before people ask. There's none around where I live. The chapter does have a dyno day in the Fall that I'll probably make sure I go to this year... Next chapter will be real world livability of these mods, but I can tell, that if I want to drive normally, it's very stock feeling. I think I need to go hurl now. |

Great review...very motivating/exciting to those that will jump on the JB bandwagon. I can't wait.

I dunno about the DPs. For the time being, probably not, but as I get used to this power, maybe so. I think an intake + FMIC would be a next step before DPs.
Once it adapts, is it even more pull, or less pull?.. because this is really quick now. |

cool!! I remember with my old 300ZXTT that modified to 450hp the thing was still easily driveable daily and really didn't feel "modified" too much unless you really got on the thing.
What are the odds that the dealer will find this thing? I'd love to do this, but am a bit worried about getting caught by the dealer and having them yank my support.

JB2H is short for Juice Box Stage 2 with H Pill. It is considerably cheaper than the $2K for the Dinan but the Dinan is warranteed if install by an approved BMW dealer.

Probably pretty good, if I leave it in there... I would suggest removing anything like this (other than the Dinan tune) for service visits.

There's a DIY on N54Tech, re the solenoid bypass. I guess it's a new thing that is supposed to smooth things out a bit. I didn't try this mod with the normal solenoid bypass, so I can only say that my current setup seems to be very stock feeling in delivery, except there's a lot more power.
I should be in the neighborhood of ~60 rwhp, and ~70rwtq, or thereabouts from other dynos of N54's I've seen with this mod. |

One more thing, I don't mean to pester you about your install. I don't know what the level of your mechanical skill is, but how difficult did you think the install was? |

For me, it was simple. I do a lot with cars, and I think that most people could get through it if they take their time. To get at the ECU, it's literally taking off a few pieces that snap off, and 8 screws.
For any of these piggybacks that are being sold, they are pretty easy to do. I would suggest that if getting one, make sure you do the install, so you can reverse it, if you need to go to the dealer... |

Larry,
what made you chose JB over Helix or dinan? Those are the top three in my list.

To be honest.. price. I think the other two might be more polished, but I don't know. If I had more cash I wanted allocated to this, I might've made a very different decision. I believe all of these tunes are probably great. I have a hunch that the other tunes that you mention have more true R&D, may be probably more polished. At least that's the impression I get. Who knows though.
I've never had a turbo car before, and wanted to tread lightly on my wallet, unless you guys want to chip in and help pay for my daughter's college education. This thread is NOT meant to be a JB endorsement, so please don't use my post as a reason to go out an get one of these. My initial results were positive, and I can only imagine the other tuner's products work similarly. The bottom line is that there's lots of factors you all should be taking into account, before doing something like this. Weight your factors, then do research, and see which one makes the best sense for you. |
