Has anyone replaced their clutch plates in the transfer case??
Hello all,
I have a 2018 M550i 43K miles. I have been having shuddering a few months after I bought the car which was about a year ago. I changed the transfer case fluid which helped in the beginning. A few weeks later same issue when taking off in any manner (fast or slow). Last night I decided to put my scanner on it to see if there were any codes and reset adaptations. I am getting a fault code in the VTG now. 44020D clutch function: End of service life reached.. I do see there are clutch packs available. Does anyone have any tips on the best way for me to get it done myself? I have done diffs before so I'm not too worried about it. I would like to get some technical data before I start though. TIA. |

I'm not sure how much this helps but I'll post anyway. I have a 2021 540i and I'm getting ready to do a transfer case (a.k.a transfer box) fluid replacement and I had to buy a scanner (foxwell nt530 - $159) just to command the car to open up the transfer case fully to pull fluid from the drain/fill plug. Bimmerlink would not do it.
So not sure if you need to do that for a 2018. Conversely I did NOT need the scanner tool for my wife's 2016 X3 transfer case. |

I am having issues with shuttering on my x5.
I have done 2 fluid changes in the last 60k miles but looks like it will need to clutch packs or a new TC. I see they have aftermarket AtC45l transfer cases everywhere for about 400 bucks. Has anyone bought one and had it installed? Very tempting but don't see any reviews. |
