Tint Situation
So I have a buddy who is a service manage at a Honda dealership and they have a guy who comes in that does tinting for them. Anyway, his guy does favors for him so I was going to have him work the tint on my car. The guy came back that he won't work on BMW or Mercedes without me signing a waiver as there have been problems in the past with water running into the "brain back" and in turn causing electrical problems.....I've never heard of this before, have any of you?:iono:

Didnt think so....I'm gonna go ahead and get mine tinted on Saturday....now....do I just go with regular tint or spring for ceramic? Heard ceramic scratches easier...is this true?

yes I have heard of it and this may have killed the TCU in my car the first time. the stuff they spray on the rear window during installation can run down inside the trunk and manage to find some electronics.

Just go ahead and tint your car. Make sure you get Solar Guard, Llumar... Something good.
If you arent careful your tints can turn purple.

Hey guys - new to the forum... ordering an smg 6speed 135 this week...but yeah...the water issue is real...fried my M3 at a "hand" car wash... insurance paid but.... Most guys will use common sense here but I guess there is a risk...my understanding is it takes a hella lot of water for this to happen...and usually it has to do with old rotting seals below the windshield... cant see that to be the case with a new car...

Planeshifter - welcome aboard. Did you mean for your post to go into the 'air intake' discussion?
PS - Never mind - I now know where the water issues are coming from - sorry about that. Thought we had wandered into a hydrolock discussion - looks like the only thing locked was my knoggin. ; -) |

The pics I've seen of tint on this forum look great. I've never tinted my windows before, mainly because I've seen so many tint jobs on the road that look like ass. What's the best way to avoid this? A certain brand? Minimum price?

I was the tint shop today for a checkup and asked my installer. Surprisingly he said yes, you have to be careful tinting the back window on BMW's especially 7 Series as a lot of the electrical runs back there and too much water can cause shorts if the car is on and possible fry a ton of stuff. He told me of a shop that did not have insurance that cost the poor rookie installer his business because he fried a customer car and could pay for the repair. He said that most good installers know this though and how to deal with it and do a great backwindow with minimal fluids. Mine looks awesome so I believe him.

Thanks for the input....I'm not going to let my buddy's guy do the tint even though he is good and I'd get a deal. Anyone can mess up and I'm not signing a waiver...now to find a reputable tint shop in my area...

that's the best thing to do.
what percent are you going with? I'm debating, cause I will have a black car. I have heard the opposite, that ceramic interferes less with radar detectors. I think it has a bit of a greenish hue to me... at least in pictures though.

I'm going to go with 35% all around....I like to stay in the somewhat legal tint range for Wisconsin....don't need the coppers messing with me. I'm already illegal right now because I don't have my front plate mounted....don't want to double my trouble.
