formatting DVD NAV drive

does anyone know if the DVD rom for the Navigator can be format or program to watch DVDs? i think this question is good for anyone who owns a BMW with a navigator in their car.

i m sure it'll void the warranty but this would be good to know once my warranty expires

I was actually looking into this the other night. Apparently there is no way to make the internal DVD drive play video DVDs as it does not have the MPEG decoder chip required to decode DVD video. There are a few after market kits which add DVD playback via a video switching modal and external DVD player. However they cost close to $1000, so I'm not sure they're worth it. Also all the ones I found were for other BMW models, so I'm also not 100% sure if they'll work in a 1er or not.

I bought a $2500 tv to watch movies/tv. Never understood why I'd want to watch movies on that tiny screen in a car..?

Or is this like the people who put TVs in the headrests on the last row of seats in their escalade... just so people know "he got TVs"

Especially in a 1 series. If you need a movie to keep you occupied in this car. Yer doin it wrong.

We spent $150 on a dual screen portable DVD player for the kids for long trips in the Odyssey. No DVDs for day-to-day driving. That's as far as it goes.

The 1er will be MY car, with no eating, movies, etc. I'm actually dreading having to put a baby seat in the back, but my younger one will be out of the baby seat and into a smaller booster seat soon after i get my 1er.

I recommend checking out the x5 board www.x5world.com, they have a great navigation forum in which all BMW/RR/MINI/etc. owners with navigation systems can research, post, etc, etc. I was able to upgrade my navi software and unlock the perspective mode (e46 MKIV system) with help from that forum...

I actually hadn't been on it in a while, and checked yesterday, there is a newer software version out for my MKIV, so I need to download it, burn it and install it today. Its going to be a rough day at the office, lol...
