First "non-routine" oil service.

Quick question: If I pay for the first (non-routine) oil service does the regular scheduled maintenance free service start 5000 miles later? For example, I have 1500 miles on the car now. Would the first scheduled service begin @ 6500 miles?

In the past, my E46 M3's had to go in for the first service @ 1200 miles for the oil & diff. change so I never had to worry about this.

The car counts down from 15000 "miles" to determine service intervals. It has been doing so since the day the car was put in service.

If you do an interim oil change, and don't rest the Service Interval, you'll still remain on the factory-specified interval.

Gotcha. I had it in my head the service intervals were every 5000 miles. I forgot they were every 15000 miles! That's just insane.

Yes, 15000 miles is quite optimistic on BMW's part.

Regardless, the concept is the same whether the interval is 5000 or 15000: if you don't reset the interval countdown, the car will keep counting down to 0.

I can't recall if the E46 M3 started counting down form 1200 for the first 1200 mile service, or if it started counting down from 15000, and they just told you to take it in at 1200.

It isn't necessarily 15,000 miles when it is reset. I've had my 325 since new and every time my service interval indicator was reset, the indicator read about 13,350. Also, this will cycle down more quickly if you do a lot of aggresive or city driving.

That said, I always paid for an oil change about 7,000 miles after the oil change was done. I will continue to do this. I think it's a no brainer. There is some debate however if and when the break-in oil change should be done. Or if it needs to be done at all. I'll probably do that at around 2,000 just for the piece of mind. The car will only be broken in once. Might as well be on the safe side.

My Z4 was used mainly for highway cruising and averaged about 17,500 miles before the service was called for.
+1 for the 7,500 mile "interim oil change". Peace of mind is worth $100.
