Very odd vibration issue
So within the last month I picked up a beautiful new to me 17’ 540 M sport with 40k miles on it. During the test drive I felt a slight vibration right around 40-55 mph felt like drivetrain related for sure. Nothing at lower speed and practically nothing above 55. Upon researching it was determined it was rear flex disk. Prior to the sale the owner took the car to bmw to have new tires mounted and balanced since it was still covered under wheel and tire. They mentioned it was a flex disk issue as well. Moved forward and purchased the car
Fast forward to today. I get the car to a bmw specialist in town we examine the rear flex disk and it’s shot. Tears in it, threads showing. For sure this was my issue. Get it swapped out they test drive it. Vibration is still there at 40-55mph,, back on the lift it goes. While I’m there they spin all 4 wheels in the air. Every single wheel they said was bent, low and behold when spinning on the lift every wheel had an oscillation to it vertically. I was stunned. I can understand 1 from maybe a pot hole or something. But for all 4 to be out of round? Secondly, how did this get missed by bmw 3 weeks ago when new tires were put on. Has anyone else come across an issue where all 4 wheels are out of round?? Wheels are 20” 759’s Last edited by BeachsideF30; 11-15-2024 at 08:15 PM.. |

As I found out wheels can be balanced on the balancing machine but still be buckled. The other giveaway is how much weight each wheel has. 15 to 35 grams ideally & certainly below 60 grams.
I've had one repaired at a wheel specialist who has an hydraulic straightener which just about eliminated the vibrations and the amount of balance weight dropped from around 100 to 25 grams. Last edited by capese21; 11-16-2024 at 07:22 PM.. |

The vehicle is ‘21 530i xDrive with 30,000 miles, CPO and new to me as of June 2024. Wheels are 19” 845’s, tires are Pirelli Cinturato P7 star all season run flats. I bought the car and immediately discovered all four wheels were bent, there was a bubble in one tire, and curb rash on one wheel. The car obviously didn’t go through the proper CPO certification/inspection. The dealership hopes you don’t notice it and drive away happy with a new-to-you car and then it becomes your problem. I received the service records for the car and the previous owner had gone through 9 tires and had three wheels repaired twice over the course of a three year lease. It seems like these wheels bend and get out of round extremely easily. The car vibrates between 25-40mph and again from 60-70. The vibration becomes much more pronounced when above 80mph. |

I ran into the same problem with my C7 Corvette Z06, which also has notoriously soft wheels. When I replaced tires in 2020 the tech said that the two passenger side wheels were bent (probably our famous potholes) but he was able (using both the Hunter Revolution tire changer and Road Force balancer) to balance the wheels and new tires so that I don't have any vibration. But I have researched forged replacement wheels since then, just in case. --Bob

The new front wheels are fantastic, and have no issues whatsoever. Now I’m trying to find a reasonable solution for the rear wheels. I have wheel and tire insurance and may put in a claim with them and hope for the best. They should cover a new set of wheels because repair the same wheels for a fifth time would be ridiculous. |

When I ordered my car I skipped the 19" wheels and went 18". They removed that option in the LCI MY 2021+ I think. It was due to me wanting to avoid issues with my tires on poor PA roads. Had issues on my MB with 17" wheels so anything bigger I knew would be problematic. The 18" wheels have served me very well. I have had wheels straitened a few times (covered by my W&T), but I haven't had any bubbles or blow outs and the bends have been very infrequent. The 19" loaner cars I got from dealerships in Philly ALWAYS had either a bubbled tire or vibration from the potholes. Helped to solidify my happiness with my decision... If your W&T doesn't cover bends or if you get tired of replacing stuff all the time (My MB also had great W&T, but I got tired of swapping tires after over 10 in a year... Gets kind of annoying after a while). You might consider picking up a used 18" or 17" wheel set to get more rubber between the pavement and your wheel. That's the only thing that can save you. ![]() |
