I have a 2021 540i M sport and am looking for more power. I have a locked ecu, and I don’t really want to go through the whole shipping ecu process. I am interested in Race Chip but was wondering how it would work with CEL from a downpipe? The GTS 5 adds “75” hp, which should be good enough for me. Definitely looking to use race chip and a downpipe but just concerned about CEL popping up.

I went the exact same route.

AA catted down pipe (no CEL guarantee )

And a race chip gts.

The setup has been running great and the bump in power is noticeable.

Bottom line, get the AA catted downpipe and you would not have to worry about emission or CEL.

I was considering racechip GTS but also was looking into JB4 as well. Pros and cons of each piggy and which to go with? My G30 is MY 17 but my dealer flashed the new software when I had a CEL last yr. So basically my ECU is locked. Like OP, don't want to go through shipping the ECU for bench unlock.

Some expert can comment better but there is a good chance that your ECU can still be bench unlocked.
Its way easier and cheaper than a femto unlock.

There is a lot of information on the pros and cons of each piggy back.
I was biased towards the Racechip for the ease of installation as I wanted to install it myself.

the check engine light from the downpipe, its a warning that you can ignore

but i recommend you get the active autowerke downpipe with no CEL guarantee. you dont want to drive your car with the CEL, 1- its very annoying 2- you wont know if there ever is an issue since the check engine light is always on.
