G30 LCI M sport steering wheel upgrade

Hi everyone

I have a 2021 540i non m sport model and i’m looking to upgrade it with some M Sport parts. I came across a really good deal for an M sport steering wheel from another LCI G30 and it has all the same buttons as my non m sport wheel. Aside from getting the proper airbag for it, would swapping the steering wheels be simple plug and play? Thanks

Yes, but be aware that you must have a steering wheel from a car manufactured after 07/2020 (LCI). The LCI steering wheel is different from the pre-LCI and can't be crossed.

Getting the airbag out of the old wheel was the hardest part, i gave up the first time and the second time i tried it took me about 30 min. The way the airbag releases on the M sport wheel is a lot easier. All the buttons, horn, paddles, and vibration motor work perfectly. No codes thrown from the car. Perfect install

Thank you for sharing. This will help. I will be doing the same with my car. Also the LCI model with the same “business” looking steering wheel like you had.

Enjoy your new sport/m steering wheel bud!

The upgrade is well worth it, the sport wheel feels and looks a lot better, let me know if you have any questions

Just did mine a few days ago. I mean not me, but the mechanic guy from the shop that I bought the steeringwheel from. Wasn’t worth the risk/effort of doing it myself over €50 of labour. It was all plug and play I believe. No coding involved at all if I’m not mistaken. The retrofit took about 15 minutes. I went out for a walk when he started and when I returned 20min later, everything was already done.

The steering wheel wasn’t cheap, around €1000, but it’s an OEM/genuine bmw steeringwheel that is in very good condition. To be honest, I prefer this one over a brand new one because a brand new one wouldn’t match the rest of the interior as much as this one. My G30 5 series is from 2021 so a brand new one would look off compared to the rest of the interior/dash.

Finding a steeringwheel with the heating option and the adaptive cruise control with the little lights above the buttons was quite difficult. Most that I found online would have either one of the two options, but not both. Also I didn’t want one with the M stitching because I don’t have a M5. So I wanted to keep it as close to my model as possible. I don’t want to be a wannabe M5 while I have a non M5 model.

Forgot to take a ‘before picture’ but here is an ‘after picture’’.

Btw, I still need to clean the steeringwheel. This picture was taken right after the install.
