I have a 2019 540i and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what the best sounding exhaust is? I know there is a lot of forums on this I just wanted a fresh response. I have a muffler delete right now but there is a little too much drone and I think it’s time to finally get an exhaust. I may also install a catted downpipe eventually so keep that in mine.

best depends on your taste.

but most importantly, you need to choose your budget and pick the best-sounding exhaust that's within your budget.

If you’re looking for a exhaust not too loud and with your downpipe take a look at the MAD axle-back exhaust. It will sound stock in comfort mode and a nice low growl in sport/+.

I have the Remus cat back with AA catted downpipe, it’s loud in sport mode and cold starts but the sound is really nice. In comfort you know it’s there but not obnoxious at all.

Money no object, then Akrapovic. I know that will get some hate, but it's what Alpina uses on their cars and if you've ever heard a B3/B4 exhaust then you know it sounds good.

More realistically, I'd have to say Remus. I had the axle-back on a F30 340i and on my old G30 540i (same version B58, but different exhaust configuration). It's a bit loud on cold start but once it breaks in after a few hundred miles it's a really nice deep mellow sound. I think it sounds the closest to the above mentioned Akrapovic at far, far less cost. Too many others I heard were very raspy or louder, neither of which I wanted.

I also have Remus cat-back exhaust system, and recently installed SST exhaust flap control. IMO, it’s pretty loud with the valve fully opened during cold start and driving. I am content w/ my setup!
