Running/walking shoes

Figure I'll give this a try here

I'm a major walker (min 5-10 miles a day). I have been happily using New Balance 1080v13s for the last year or so. I recently picked up a pair of v14s as my batch of 13s are wearing out. I have achillies tendonitis and have found the 1080v13 to be fantastic for this.

However New Balance has taken a step backwards in cushioning with the v14, so I'm now looking at what other options there might be. An important note is that I require an extra wide shoe, which limits my options.

In addition to the v14, I recently tried the Hoka Bondi 9, as I heard that they had improved the cushioning over the Bondi 8. While this is true, it is not as good as the v14 let alone the v13.

I have 1080v13s and love them. I had v12, and I think v11. All were good but v13 are the best so far.

You can still buy v13s online, if I am understanding the google results I see.

Very limited selection, especially since I need extra wide. But I did manage to find one pair in a color I like

I looked around, too. I'd need 13 extra wide. Not much selection there.

It's been a couple of months since my initial post and after trying a few different options I have a couple of fairly good alternatives.

The most comfortable by far is the New Balance Fresh Foam X More v5. The only real drawback to it is the toe box width. This area is so wide that it makes it uncomfortable, dare I say unsafe for me to drive my G42 as I can catch my foot on the brake pedal when lifting off the accelerator. I've made the decision that I will not drive the BMW when wearing these (they are fine in the Pilot). I'll add that I bought a second pair that are wide vs extra wide and they are still a bit too wide in the toe box.

The next, which is more of an equivalent to the 1080 v13 is the ASICS Gel Nimbus 27. This shoe is as cushioned as the v13, if not slightly more. The main negative is that these run narrow and their X-Wide feels narrower than a New Balance regular wide, let alone the 4E that I prefer. But they are still a better alternative than the 1080 v14.

A possibility to fit into a standard or wide shoe (vs extra wide) is a bit of weight loss.

Nope, at a steady 160-165lbs (down from as high as 245 pre-heart attack) I've got no room for added weight loss.

I just have wide feet and walk a lot. So comfort is supreme to me

Have you had a gait analysis done at a proper shoe store? Running stores can fit you for pronation, arch, foot strike and other things, like achillies tendonitis.

When I developed Planters training for a long race, I moved from Brooks Adrenaline to Ascis Novablast for runs over 3 miles. The Novablast might not be right for you, but a good running store and fit you.

I went to a specialty store several years back and they were the ones who finally got me fitted into the proper size & width shoe. Even though they didn't push anything too pricey, this is where I also started learning that like tires, you should never cheap out on shoes!

I have thought about hitting up a good running shoe store to get some added input, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Especially since I've found some options that have significantly helped the tendonitis.

What I would really like to find now is a running/walking shoe for the winter that doesn't cause me problems. I love my Merrell's, but my problematic heel doesn't love them so much anymore. My feet get too cold and wet in the New Balance, ASIC, etc. running shoes I use the rest of the time.

If I recall they don't have a wide option.

I always order EE wide shoes and the toe box fits me perfectly despite not being wide. And I have Fred Flinstone feet. You should try them out in a store just to see what you think.

I wear Hoka Arahi 7's in a 12 Wide. It fits my wide toe-box. I used to wear the Gaviota but with the 4 they made it stiffer and I don't like how it feels for walking (probably better running).

I'm a Hoka convert for sure. For me (6'2", 220) they offer a great blend of cushioning and support. And the forefoot is wide. Part of my problem is that even with a so-called wide shoe while the upper might not be stretched out, the sole isn't wide enough or supportive on the edge and the outer edge of my forefoot (particularly my left) gets really sore.

Never had that issue with the Hoka's.

Have tried OnClouds but the stability isn't there for fast walking. I have a pair as a knock around sneaker and they are super comfy but have tried walking in them and they are a mess.

Hi,
Any advice for running shoes for races like OCR with obstacles passing through water (good drainage), if possible, black shoes

Altra seem to be the go-to for OCRs like Spartan, Tough Mudders, etc. I wear the Lone Peak

Wanted to update this as I just got the Arahi 8's this weekend. Not sure if the improvements to the shoe are super or it's just I needed new shoes (probably more the latter than the former) but the 8's are even better than the 7's. Broke them in nicely this weekend and felt great.

12 W, no pain whatsoever.

I am in the market for a new pair of shoes over the next couple of months. I wear NB 1080s now and have done for the past 3 generations. I like them and they are the "do nothing" option.

Hokas look good and have similar specs as 1080s. I want to try them but the force of inertia will make it hard to change from NB. The shoes are for regular short-mid distance walking and all-around.

I want to start running again, so the the shoes need to be capable if I am successful with running. I stopped running 8 years ago with significant hip pain, I think it is trochanteric bursitis. I tried a few 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile runs this spring and it seemed to go well. Some weight loss combined better running technique and hip strengthening from swimming and cycling may be creating a positive scenario for a return to running.

I hear Corvette owners love NB's... and jorts.
