I'll bet they're not adaptive.

Great, so you can "upgrade" the best thing about pre-LCI G30s, the Icon headlights.

But sarcasm aside, those halo LED modules probably would last more than those in the original headlights. I have cheap Ebay halos in my E39 that are as bright as those in the G30 and have been there for years with zero issues.

My G30 is 7 years old, original DRLs. No issues. Most issues happen because people of course gotta code them brighter!

I don't know about that. It's a pretty common failure even for the average man who doesn't fuck with his car. So many posts and attempted repairs out there. It's a design flaw for sure.

Fingers crossed, my '18 are still burning white with no yellow as well, but I definitely think it's not an If but a When.

Wait...warranty? No way or is this just a service bulletin? I saw warranty at the bottom, so wasn't sure.

It's just a service bulletin unfortunately. BMW seems to extend warranties on the cheap shit like thermostats and active grills. I cringe at the thought of writing this check someday. Route 66 doesn't cover lighting, as you know.

I've said it a few times already: Those LED heat sinks are in the worst possible place. Fully enclosed in an area with no air circulation, with hot asphalt underneath and a hot engine on the other side. The LEDs also don't have any thermal management at all. They should be drawing less current/dim if temperatures get too high.

Some models have the heat sinks on top of the headlight assembly, and those have zero issues.

I'm waiting for the grille flaps to eventually fail so I have an excuse to take the bumper off and glue computer case fans on the heat sinks and also apply better thermal paste while I'm at it.

Are the active grill shutters not covered by the 15yr/150k extension in your country?

Completely agree with you on your assessment of the issue. I think we all wish it was just limited to people who crank up the brightness.

We get notified of mandatory recalls (e.g. Takata airbags) but there are no public bulletins on extended warranties. The dealer usually honors what's being done elsewhere so my guess is that it would be covered but until it happens to me, no idea.

I don't trust their mechanics, though. For something like the active shutters I'd rather do it myself. A few days ago my fuel lid actuator failed and when researching how to replace it, I found photos of dealers causing paint damage, not clipping the new fuel pot correctly in place, etc. Unless it's an extremely expensive repair, I know I'll do it better.

Would you get reimbursed for your time though? I assume BMWNA would reimburse the part cost for the active shutters. I haven't gotten around to taking mine into the dealer or wherever yet. Mine are stuck open for the past 2 weeks with a CEL 🤦🏽‍♂️. I just hate going to the dealer and am absolutely dreading it.

My F10 is 11 1/2 years old and one of the first things I did was code the corona rings to 100% at night (I believe they're 100% during the day). They're still going strong at just over 87K miles and 8 years since coding.

I now, this is just anecdotal..

Really doubt it. Especially if it's my choice to DIY it after they offered to perform the fix. Example: that fuel pot/actuator cost me $80 (OEM) and 1 hour of my time. Between the dealer round trip (fuel/driving) and round trip (Uber) it's close to a wash, not to mention that the peace of mind knowing that I won't find any hidden surprises later on is priceless.

I'll call and ask one day just for fun.

I am not sure on that - mine was replaced during the warranty period.

EDIT: I'd also just like to mention look at the letters you get from BMW - they should mention the warranty being extended for specific pieces like the active shutters (the design aspect honestly still bugs me even after all these years - it just seems overkill, especially since it's prone to fail)

I finally got around to dropping the car off to get my active shutters fixed. My SA told made me sign for a $255 diag fee which he claims is only if they do not find manufacturer fault with the shutters. He said something about the software being an older version and might need a $355 update too, which I was like uhh I don't need all that, everything is fine...these shutters are just stuck open and even that isn't an issue, but wince it's under warranty, I'm wanting to fix it. Let's hope they don't try and weasel out of this saying it's not a manufacturer issue. If it is, they won't charge for the diag. Kind of annoying how they do that, but I guess I understand that they're trying to CYA from people who have physical damage from an accident or whatever trying to claim this fix.

Smells funny to me, but I hope you are right. My dealer has NEVER even spoken the words diagnostic fee. You have a CEL right? You don't need a software update, again, something my dealer knows to not even ask me about. My account is flagged "do not update software". They have solved a few different issues (mostly seat mat and seat belt issues) where they could have finagled a software update and they didn't.

Per the warranty, they should just replace the friggin thing. Trouble is, there is a flat fee from BMW NA on this warranty and they are trying to squeeze a few more bucks out of it with the software update. I am assuming the diagnostic fee will be waived because they show no signs of damage. The code is the code.

Picked the car up last night. No charge for anything and no further mention of a software update. Good to go!

Btw, I learned that this same gen M5 don't have these active shutters...why do we think that is?

And speaking of the M5, they had a green G90 strategically parked out front. That thing looks mean as hell!! I think it looks great, better in person too. I can't bring myself to spend $134k on it, but maybe in a couple years. It was parked next to a G30 "M540i". The size of the M was bigger than the 540i, looked so odd. Unsure why the dealer wouldn't have removed that M badge. But sorta still on the topic of shutters/grilles. I don't know why the whole bottom area of the radiator on this new M5 is exposed beyond the front bumper. It needs some sort of grill or protector there. I see this being a problem or bulletin in a couple yrs.

Great news. Yeah, the ///M cars don't have active shutters where most all of the other models do. I trust the engineers. There is definitely a trend out there where people cut out the active shutters thinking the engine will benefit because the F90 doesn't have them.

They open when they need to which is fine for me.
