Who do you tip when you bring it in for service?
Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see who people tip when they pick up their car from serivce.
I always tip the person that drives up with my car when I pick it up, but I have seen/heard that some people tip their service advisors, the person that gives them the loaner car and does the walk around, etc.

Yes, I've found that in general, giving money away is always appreciated.

THe best way to do it is if your work requires some payment. A simple 10 might give you a pretty sizable discount on your bill.. at least in my experiences

I just tip the person that brings my car. Usually $2. I have never tipped a SA. Like I said, I was just curious.

yeah it's not a valet, if anything, i don't think it's professional.
edit: why would you tip anyway? your going to end up giving them a ridiculous amount of money in the future anyway. |

I end up tipping my local bar tender
Dealing with waranty issues always seems to drive me to the bar about 30 minutes after I get my car back only to find out that the problem still exists!

Generally speaking, one never gives a gratuity to a 'professional.' Your SA and the techs consider themselves 'professionals': No tips, it's an insult to most.
Now, the guy that's making minimum wage moving your car around the lot, or the fellows that wash it after service (if you let 'em), are pretty dag blag OK with a small tip, IF you can make it 'sneaky' but sincere. I find that a few of my spousal unit's homemade Christmas rum cakes, supplied judiciously to the SAs and techs on Christmas Eve, help in their remembering for the rest of the year that I'm not just another problem. Although the way to a man's heart is considerably BELOW his stomach, the stomach is as far South as I'm willing to go. Oddly enough, treating your SA as if he's doing you a special favour, even when he's not really doing anything more than giving simple good service, will go an awfully long way in making the difference later on between 'warranty' and 'wear and tear', and full-bore stick-'em-in-the-eye retail vs. 'brother-in-law' labour and parts rates. Go figure. |
