700 mile oil service?

This morning my car's service told me to schedule a oil service. The car has only 700 miles.

Is this the 1200 mile service everyone is talking about? If so, any idea why does it comes this early?

I have had the car for 2 months, it sat in the garage for a month and I have been putting about 50~60 miles on it every day this month commuting to and from work.

As far as I know 1200 miles is the suggested service mileage but there are sensors within the car the measure your fluids, and depending on your driving style can alert you of the service sooner. I think in some cases on the forum the car even alerted the dealer and the customer got a call from their SA. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though, as I don't own one yet.

its just telling you that you should schedule an appointment soon...its orange, not red...go into the menu and see how many actual miles until the service is due..I have a hunch it will say 500 miles.

My SA just called to schedule first service - except I just picked up the car 4 days ago! I only have 515 miles on it! Is this weird? I'm not even halfway to 1200 yet! Kinda freaked out.

Well, in case this helps anyone else out - I called the SA back and asked him to confirm that he really wanted me to come in for the 1200 even though I only had 515 on the clock, and would probably have around 600 by the time I brought it in. He assured me that it was normal and fine. So I got up at the crack of goddamn dawn today, the day I usually get to sleep in, and drove the car in - it had about 670 miles on it when I pulled in. After five minutes, I was told they couldn't do the service, it's too early, they wouldn't get reimbursed by BMW if they did it, and that the SA had screwed up by telling me to come in. Told me to bring it back when I'm at 1200. Sounded like SA was starting to get yelled at when I was walking out, but they put it on pause until I was out the door. Lame.

It's called a 1200 mile service for a reason....

They call early so you can schedule the service, not so you can redline it early. A couple of thousand of German lab coats at BMW probably know the appropriate time to get the first service...

That's the thing - I didn't want to bring it in at 500-600 - it's my car, and it only gets one break-in period and I want it done right. When the SA kept saying no, bring it in, I was like "oh well I guess BMW knows best" - turns out they do, but that SA didn't. He was actually willing to have me bring it in that night, with 515 on the clock. I put scheduled it for several days later, and had almost 700 on by the time I brought it in. Oh well, at 1000 now, and almost ready for it to actually get done.

I got the same service warning on my car this morning. It has about 590 miles on the clock, and it said that I should take it in for an oil inspection/change at 700 miles. Maybe 09s have an intermediary service recommendation before the 1,200 mile checkup?
