Exclamation Engine Failure

Have any of you ever got an "engine failure" message on your car? My friend got one so he took it to the dealer. He has a 535.

Conclusion: They told him not to run the car on empty. Make sure to have atleast 40 miles to empty on it. Air was sucked in the fuel lines, bla bla bal....
That was the dealers explanation after the car was there for almost one month.
Sound like BS?

thought i should share. They claim that when the prices of gas were higher they would get alot of these at the dealer since people were driving till the last drop of fuel.....

I run my car down to single digits almost every tank. Sounds like BS to me.

I've literally run my car out of gas (stall) a few times and no issue. Other than having to coast over to the side of the road and pull out jugs of race gas from the trunk.

Does it say that in the manual anywhere? If not (I'm sure it does not) it's BS.

Silly. In a diesel it can be hard to restart the engine because the air will create a lot of froth and foam like the head of a beer, but it won't break the engine. With gas it should prime pretty quick - certainly not going to kill the engine.

When I received the "engine failure" message, it was my HPFP.

This statement is on page 58 of my 135 owners manual

Refuel as soon as possible once your cruising range falls below 30 miles otherwise engine functions are not ensured and damage can occur.

I'm not saying it's true.....just saying.

Sounds like a fancy way of saying the engine might not run without gas

I think that it took them a month to come up with a story like that.

In all fairness, we all know that we have seen a lot of posts about people getting this message and cars not running right with anything below a 1/4 tank, and it mostly turned out to be cars that had failing HPFPs. Is that exactly what they said after a month? Where does he live and what dealership is that? Not saying they lied; I just like to know who they are because if they are near where I am, I like to avoid going there at all costs.
