Angry Clear lens assembly?!

Somebody clear this up for me, cause I cant belive what I just heard a little while ago. As some of you know, I am ordering a US Spec E90 to be shipped to the UK. Of course, it will come with those ugly amber turning signals in the front. For my E46 and previous models, all I had to do was go to the UK dealer ( all Europe models COME with clear turn signal lenses ) and buy the things and slap them on. Well I just went to the dealer an hour ago to order a pair of clear lenses..The BMW mechanic tells me the headlight assembly is one WHOLE unit, and the lenses dont just "come out"...He said the only way was to replace the whole headlight assembly... Is he smoking something, or is he for real?! They wanted 4oo bucks a piece for the things!!

is everyone sure that you can't open it up like on the e46? if that's the case and I know some of you will cringe at this suggestion but with my s2000 in order to remove the orange reflector from the headlights it's a common thing to bake the headlight assembly to soften the glue that holds the thing together and then you can replace the orange with a clear reflector. i know it sounds like a big operation but for me it was worth not having orange reflectors on a black car.

Hmm..thanks for the advice SoCal...At 400 bucks, Ill try anything..I ordered some anyway, but this will help for those who feel they have skillful hand..Not me unfortuantely..I just dont understand..All across Europe, Amber turning signals are mandatory, but the MFR's just use Amber LIGHT BULBS and still use clear lenses..Why cant we do the same?!

I don't blame ya, orange reflectors probably stand out the most on black cars.

It is true, what your mechanic said. The old E36/e46 had the turn signals as a separate piece (if you look at them in pictures you can see a line separating the turn signals from the rest of the headlight), so it was simple to just unscrew the orange turn signals and put in clears. Now however its all one piece like the Z3 or 5 series is. It looks alot more elegant this way, but of course its gonna cost us modders an arm and a leg to change. The usual way to do this is to buy a whole new assembly like alot of Z3 people have had to do.

But there are el cheapo ways of doing it by opening up the glue of the assembly yourself like socals2k said. me or some other member will figure this out once we get our cars

I can get you a pair Ew, but it might take a couple weeks to come in and they want payment first for special orders unfortunately..not only that, but the Xenons are 339 pounds (670 bucks) a piece!! Holy (*&#!! Not for me..the bad part is, and I dont know how it happens, but they will be on ebay in a week for a fraction of the price..Although, I bought non-OEM side blinkers for my E46 and they took 2 days to crack...Careful!!

I might just pick up a pair...thanks bozo5521 for the offer. So $1340 huh...How much do you want for your time and effort. I am more that happy to pay you for that. But give me a day or two and I'll give you a definite answer.

You want the Xenons? I can get them for you. Dont worry about the time. Just cover the shipping, and that should do. Let me know.

Update..I have been asked by a couple people about having to adjust the clear lenses as they will be ordered in UK specs..(right hand drive) I was told that BMW has been manufacturing "flat beam" headlights, which means they will not have to be adjusted..I will post the update as soon as I find this out for sure...Also, the Xenon lenses are 630 bucks a piece!! Regulars are around 430 bucks...

The adative lights use a diffrent assembly, so you would have to get the correct one

Yep, but they are pretty expensive. The adaptive headlights are Xenons, and they cost 575 pounds (1100 bucks) a piece. They are in stock also, as I just got off the phone with the parts department.

Not a stupid question at all Robin...Im only here for a few years, then I head back to the US..I am not able to ship UK cars back without having a million bucks worth of modifications done..emissions, etc...Also, I get a diplomat discount on BMW's being overseas, and for the E90 it was about 4K off of MSRP...Otherwise, getting a UK spec would have been no problem...Basically, I didnt want to spend 60,000 bucks (30,000 pounds) on a car I couldnt take back with me...Hey - Netherlands? when I come down there to visit?!?
