Only the dealer can tell you, but you can also look at your past invoices from your dealer and see if you have been updated. What is the build date of your E92?

I think my car build date is Jan 08. I ordered Dec 07 and recieved FeB 08. I know that some changes were made for March 08 and later builds, so I think I spilpped in right before that.

BMW released a statement last fall regarding the "turbo lag" issue:

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/18/b...date-software/

Like raceyBMW said, you have to check with the dealer to find out which version you have and whether you need the update. My (limited)understanding is that if you haven't had the dealership work on your car (and possibly update your car's software to 29.xx - 31.xx), you don't have the lag and/or need the updated software (32.xx). But I'd double check this with the service manager at your dealership. Enjoy your new JB3!

Check out this thread.

I got updated a couple weeks ago when my car was showing a brake warning light on the dash but nothing was actually wrong. They updated me and now my car has lag. I was given a 335 loaner, and then went back into mine and the difference was very very noticeable.

So should I get the update? I do feel like there is some lag but maybe I am just being picky. I definately dont want to make things worse.

raceyBMW: I read the link you sent - very helpful but still confusing! Lots of if/buts. Have you figured out why your car now has the lag? Did you get the latest software - ISTA/P 2.32.2.0.1?

My car is a 3/08 build, which is right on the cusp. I notice that my 335i pulls hard starting at 3,000 rpm. It doesn't bog below 3,000 but it doesn't pull really strong either. Not sure if this is the "lag" or not. I checked with the service manager at Gephardt about 2 months ago and he said if I haven't had my car serviced (I haven't), then I don't have the lag since they haven't updated the software since it left the factory. And they said if they did install the software, it would actually make my care slower. Huh? I asked why but they never answered the question. But maybe that's what you're experiencing?

Last thing - in the link you sent, Meyergru says "ED cars, for example are updated upon redelivery at the VPC weeks after initial build. Only the dealer can tell you the exact version on your car." Well, my car was European Delivery! Even though I haven't take my car in for service, I could still have the turbo lag inducing software. What a pain. And I can't remember if my car pulled harder when I picked it up in Germany compared to now. My car is plenty fast, but like you guys, I want my car to be all it can be!

My car absolutely has lag now. I was updated with v32.1, but I don't think they followed the guidelines to eliminate the lag by going with stock wastegate functionality. I am going back in a week to have it reprogrammed using the procedure they have for the lag fix. Will give everyone an update after that.

Before my car would pull immediately from ~1800rpm, but now its more like 3000-3500rpm.

This is what was said for 03/08 and later build dates
Quote:
Situation of cars with post 03/08 build dates:

In 03/08, there was a change in ECU/DME hardware as well - BMW now uses MSD81 hardware instead of MSD80. Some cars up to 05/08 can still have MSD80, BTW. This change was meant as a counter-measurement for piggyback tunes. MSD81 units have different DME software versions - they have the same numbering scheme but they are different. At least that is what BMW says. Also, they say, that cars having MSD81 are not affected by "turbo lag", since their software was never altered because they always have new wastegate rods.

Thus, the "lag fix" is not offered for cars > 03/08. According to BMW, those cars are "not affected", although some owners say otherwise. If you own such a car and feel lag, you may have one of the few post-03/08 MSD80 cars. Otherwise, you are out of luck as BMW denies lag claims for MSD81 cars.
If you want to read up even more on all of this, you can check out this thread. Its very large though, so might take you a while to make it through.

I wish everyone could drive that loaner I was in and then go sit in theirs, it would be a good indication of if their car has lag or not.

If you have the actual golf tee mod done, where you plugged the hose, then there is no worry. However if you unplug the actuator harness like I do then ya you should plug it back in because they can see the code.

Good suggestions raceyBMW - I might stop by Schomp tomorrow to test drive a 335i, see if I notice a difference. If it's obvious, I'll call my SA to schedule a service appointment. If they won't cooperate, I'll call BMWNA.

My car's response sounds similar to what you describe. And I read that section about post 3/08 builds - the short answer is maybe... or maybe not. Probably impossible to know if I have the MSD80 or MSD81 hardware.

Hope your next visit to the dealership is successful.

E92 SID, if your car is pre 29.2, then keep it that way. People tell me that it is harder to set a tuner code with JB3 if you are pre 29.2. Atleast that is what everyone says. I'm pre 29.2 and I'm keeping it that way. BMW will only update your car if it's necessary like if you complain about the wastegate noise or lag.

You can actually physically pull the ECU box out and it says right on there if it is MSD80 or MSD81.

I took my car into Schomp last week and they updated the software to the latest version to address the possible lag issue. My 335i MT does not seem noticeably faster (or slower) but the power delivery is smoother. Before the update the power didn't kick in until about 3,000 RPM. Not a huge difference but I'm glad I took it in.

RaceyBMW: did you take your car back in for the lag? Did they fix it?

p.s. The SA never did confirm whether I had the post 29.2 program which introduces the lag. My car had never been in for service, so it didn't seem likely that I had the software that causes the lag. But then I heard that European Delivery cars, like mine, are reprogrammed at the VPC weeks after the initial build due to Euro vs US specs.

Yeah, I took it back, and they did fix it. Re-flashed using the lag-fix option. And I agree, even though the car may not be any faster, the power just comes on so much more linearly and is a lot more predictable.

This is the real deal guys, and anyone who has lag and can get it per the SIB should go in and get re-flashed.
